Can anyone here recommend Reiki ?
Edited on Thu May-27-04 08:53 PM by BigBigBear
As some of you know, my wife is holding out stubbornly against end stage liver failure - she was admitted to the hospital 5/6 with her liver and kidneys both close to failing. They sloshed some fluids around in her, boosted her blood pressure, put her on Prednisone and sent her home with me on 5/21.

Half her doctors think she has a fifty percent chance of surviving, a few think she has next to zero, the rest haven't offered an opinion.

She is extremely weak, frighteningly yellow and a little slow on the uptake, although seems to be getting a little bit stronger most days. But she's still retaining fluid and a few other physical signs aren't very promising - although her vitals have been strong throughout this crisis.

She actually went in to her office to catch up on mail, etc. There are a couple of healers in her office suite and she did a session on a Vibe Machine this afternoon; she said it made her feel "a little less pooped" than before, then a Reiki master who happened to be in her office offered to do a session with her. After 20 minutes or so, the Reiki lady said her hands were tingling, because my wife was pulling so much energy.

Anyone have firsthand experience with Reiki? I'd happily hire this lady if I had ANY sense it could help my wife.

3. I had Reiki after my surgery last year
I felt so much better afterward. My husband the skeptic said it was just all in my mind, but I felt really good and more relaxed afterward. Good luck!

5. Yes.
I've had hours of Reiki; most of it free.

I had an accident about 3 years ago that left me with a skull fracture and a severe frontal lobe concussion, some nerve damage, and a lot of soft tissue damage. I had weekly Reiki treatments for months.

Of course, this is anecdotal, and just one case, but here is what I experienced after each session:

An immediate reduction in inflammation, and increase in range of motion.

Reduction in pain.

Overall, I recovered much more quickly than I was "supposed" to. To my doctors' puzzlement. They didn't want me to go back to work. They told me I might not be ready for 6 months, and that I might never recover from some of the nerve damage. (Right and wrong; the shooting pains and tingles down the arms into the hands were gone in 3 weeks; I never recovered the sense of smell). I was on vacation at the time of the accident; I spent 6 days in intensive care, was home for 2 weeks, and then back to work in my classroom without ever missing a day. Not that I was operating at 100%; "back to work" meant I was functioning well in the classroom, but then going home to rest. Household chores and professional paperwork were sadly behind schedule.

Reiki isn't a "cure" for anything. It works well along side conventional medical care. As it was explained to me, it is balancing/cleansing the flow of energy/chi/whatever you personally call it, so that the natural healing process progresses without impediments. It's also compared to a "laying on of hands" type healing, except that the practioner doesn't have to touch you. You do feel a great deal of heat coming from their hands.

It was effective enough in my case for me to refer my son, who was (and is) in pain due to untreated hernias. He was skeptical and didn't go, so I can't tell you any more about that.

13. Thanks for sharing an incredible story, LWolf
Reduction in inflammation is precisely what she needs; specifically her liver. Oncve inflamed, the liver chugs toxins into the body and becomes dangerously susceptible to complete failure. The Prednisone my wife is taking is precisely for its anti-inflammatory properties.

7. Wholeheartedly YES!
Yes, yes, yes! I firmly believe we have the ability to heal ourselves. Reiki will provide healing energy to your wife. Of course, she will need to be receptive.

Don't know where she's at spiritually, but my mom is pretty fundie and I just explained to her that it's similar to the hands-on healing that is mentioned in the Bible. That got her past the new-age-ness of it that had her a little freaked out. My personal belief is that it is the energy of the universe and for some, it's simplest (or most comfortable) for them to think of that as God's healing energy/power.

Good luck!

11. Unhesitatingly...
it's fantastic. I don't care if the result is "real" or psychosomatic, it works for me. And all you have to do is relax and be receptive. No pain, no surgery, no pills, no nasty tests, etc.

12. Well
she gets the pills and the nasty tests and the daily injections, too, but even the doctors concede those aren't really doing very much. Helping her hold her ground while her liver (hopefully) heals itself - which, if it's doing that, is taking its time. (Everyone expectd this...)

I understand Reiki is not a curative discipline, it's a channel for curing energy. As I said, the practicioner who treated her for 15-20 minutes was taken aback by how desperately her body seemed to draw the energy.

To me, that's either saying that her body craves and devours the healing energy channeled by the practicioner, or the practicioner can see what terrible shape my wife is in and wishes to be hired as her Reiki master...by me.

Pardon the cynic rising to the surface in me here, but this whole experience has left me bitter and skeptical.

But thx for your recommendations - I'll arrange regular sessions for Karin to see this lady.

14. I'm a Reiki Master Myself - So Is My Wife
I don't practice any more because after my accidents I can't concentrate or hold my hands in a single position for long. (This also force me to stop practicing hypnotherapy.)

But I fully endorse Reiki. I give myself Reiki from time to time, and it helps control my back pain.

I read your message to my wife, and she felt that perhaps your wife is drawing too much energy for one Reiki practitioner. See if there is a Reiki Circle in your area - that's where several Reiki Masters get together and pool their energies.

I'm sending positive energy to you and your wife.

15. Thanks Co Lib !
We live in Colorado, as it happens. The master who saw her today asked permission for a remote session with other masters - I said okay, not sure what else I would have said.

Since we're in the same neighborhood, could you PM me some names, maybe?

19. I've Been Out of the Loop For a Few Years
Edited on Fri May-28-04 10:20 AM by CO Liberal
If there is a New Age store in your area, they usually have information about holistic practitioners in the area. For example, the Celebration store in the 2100 block of Colorado Avenue in Colorado Springs. And I'm sure there are several such stores in the Denver area, if that's closer to your neck of the woods.

And I'm sure you'd have no trouble finding one in the Boulder area....

In a remote session, Reiki Masters in various locations tap in to the universal energy source (which many of us simple call "the Source") and direct that energy in a single direction - in this case, toward your wife. It's the same basic concept as a Reiki Circle, but all the Masters don't have to be in the same room.

17. Do it!
I sent you a PM. I learned about it when my brother was dying. We used it on him but he was barely alive by then. My friend did Radience Therapy on me and I swear he kept me going when I thought I could no longer go on. I read some books on it and I do think it is amazing.

18. YES.... She should try Reiki
Many years ago I had a problem with menstruation, and had missed a few periods (definitely not pregnant :) ). I went to a Reiki person that was recommended by a friend. Just minutes into the session, my period started. I have friends that have had WONDERFULLY healing experiences with Reiki. It is definitely worth it to try.

All the best to you both.

21. I must admit
that this thread has left me feeling alternately hopeful/encouraged, and deeply skeptical at the same time.

My wife said this morning, "Well, there's nothing to lose, right?" Not sure if that's the appropriate attitudinal stance to allow this to work; at least it's not negative.

Me? I've been sparring with negativity for a month now.

23. Just spoke to my wife on the phone
she left a message for the Reiki lady.

My wife sounds terrible today - seems like less and less each day to feel optimistic about. Her physical therapist is dropping her (because she's too 'well' for hospital-sponsored home care, paradoxically), she's got runs and she feels extremely weak.

God, this is awful.

24. As much as I am definitely a skeptic,
anything that compliments what she is already doing and DOES NO HARM is worth a shot...people create endorphins which respond to all sorts of input and are the body's own natural anti-depressant....state fo mind matters when facing illness...I say go for it...and more hugs to you and Mrs. Bear
