Dog Owners - A warning about proheart 6 heatworm medicine
Edited on Thu May-27-04 10:52 PM by Kadie
My local news is going to talk about this tonight. I found this story and thought I would post it. I know that there are a lot of pet owners out here.

CBS 11 Investigates: Dog Heartworm Medicine

May 26, 2004 8:19 pm US/Central
CBS 11's Mary Stewart investigates.

Heartworm disease in dogs can be deadly. But some pet owners are convinced a popular heartworm medicine can do just as much harm. But the drug makers say millions of dogs have benefited from the heartworm protection.

snip...
"I've seen one case of facial edema, hives, in a scharpe, swelled up in the parking lot, treated similar to any other allergic reaction. I've had cases of vomiting and diarrhea two and three days post."

The makers of proheart 6 ---fort dodge animal health ---sent this letter to dr. Avay, warning of the "rare occurrence of death" in "less than 1-percent of the doses sold in vet clinics. " In fact, the FDA has received 4-thousand reports of adverse reactions to proheart 6.

snip...
Veterinarian Bob Rogers wonders why the FDA hasn't taken the drug off the market.

"I have seen veterinary drugs pulled off the market when there were less deaths involved than this."

1. My daughters pet rotti
almost died. Started vomiting and bleeding internally within 15 min of the sht. It causes a type of deadly anemia, it cause the lining of the blood vessel to deteriorate. The dog was saved by cortisone steriod and aggressive care, his liver enzymes are still slightly elevated. The Dr. said it was an absolute miracle that the dog lived, the reason why is because I happened across a web site that described the symptons and e-mailed to the vet, because they would not beleieve what I was telling my daughter over the phone. It is a horrible medication because it is so easy to male a mistake in the delivery process and the dog is literally poisoned.

4. THANKS!
We'll stick to HEARTGUARD (ivermectin).

Our Corgi/Border mix and the two Pembrokes love the stuff anyway. They think it's a treat.

5. there are flea-dips that should not be on the market, too
There are flea dips that have powerful and toxic insecticides in them. There is a lot to watch out for when caring for your pet.
