What's the best (free) version of Linux?
I have Red Hat 8, but have been out of the loop for a while. I think I fancy an upgrade.

What do y'all recommend?

1. If you want it to do work...
rather than as a toy like you would use a GUI like Windows, Debian is by far the best. Upgrades happen smoothly (err, I'm looking for a word to use here, maybe continuously...) unlike with Windows or Red Hat. I haven't used X Windows on Linux in just over 10 years, so I don't know how Debian compares to Red Hat in that regard.

2. I heard the recently released Fedora Core 2 upgrades well over older RHs
like yours. But if you dual boot with Windows 2000 or above you may want to read this first: http://lwn.net/Articles/86835/
