Poll question: Best President in History
I believe that it takes at least 25 years for a president's place in history to establish itself. Hence, Bill Clinton will not be included in this poll.

14. JFK gets my vote too
I was at Amazon.com today and read the Editor's review of Donovans' PT109. I didn't know that 2 months after that incident, JFK was at the helm of another PT Boat (PT59) and saved the lives of 50 Marines who were trapped in the the water under enemy gunfire. He was finally given medical leave in Novmber of 1943 because of malaria and broken vertabre (was also down to 125 lbs.). I despise the revisionists that refuse to acknowledge this extreme bravery.

5. Polk I put among the worst
although, like many others, he was a Tennessee Democrat, he started the Mexican American Landgra... I mean War, and was an all-around rather mediocre president....

15. didn't the size of the U.S.
double under his presidency?

That's gotta count for something. I think I heard Bill Clinton mention that on C-SPAN once when he was talking about presidents HE admired.

4. What, no Big Dog?
I think he certainly could have been the best in history--had he not been dogged at every turn by the VRWC.

6. I think he was anyway
But then I can keep the roles of president, husband, father distinct.

7. Where's Bill Clinton?
Peace (including Northern Ireland) and record prosperity (including a string of major budget surpluses). He certainly was the best performing president we've ever had economically.

10. Lincoln
He preserved the Union, and no matter the political jostling involved, ended the enslavement of human beings.

11. Lincoln or Jefferson
I voted for Lincoln, but I am a great admirer of Jefferson, Madison and Monroe. However, Lincoln is a Kentucky boy.
Our presidents have either been winners or real losers. Who would have thought anyone could top Reagan.

17. We should adopt the Vatican practice of calling the bad ones "anti-popes"
Except, of course, we could refer to them as "anti-presidents". "W" is even closer to the idea of an anti-pope, having no legal claim to the office he occupies.

20. Truman..
He made more momentus decisions than any other president: Dropping of the A-Bomb, integrating the army, the repeal of the Taft-Hartley Act, etc.

I realize many other presidents did great things, too (e.g. Lincoln and the slaves, FDR and the Great Depression) but I think the fact that Truman made so many momentus decisions and he did his best to take the heat for things and get rid of corruption makes him the "best" president.

WTF?

I mean, I think a better argument could be made for Adams
or Madison, to name only two.

Polk?

23. FDR!!
The republicans still fume and steam at the sound of his name.
It has been said that Polk has never received the recognition that he deserved. Someday I should read up on him and his administration.
