Swastikas to be Taken Out of Courthouse

The Bonneville County Courthouse will soon be getting a new look. But you'll have to look close to see the change.

The county commissioners have been getting complaints that the tile in the courthouse is in the symbol of a swastika.

The court house was built in 1921, before Hitler was known in America. Commissioners tell us the swastika is actually a Hindu symbol, but they'll be changing it anyway.

They'll paint in one box to make the symbol four boxes instead.

and has been found in many other ancient cultures. I have seen pictures of swastikas in ancient synagogues. The main difference between the Hindu and Nazi swastikas are that they point in opposite directions.

5. As a history major, I think that's ridiculous

I view it as similar to John Ashcroft covering up historical statues that are naked.

It would be easy enough to explain to a few people that the courthouse predates the rise of the Nazis. (In 1921, the NSDAP had only a few thousand followers and was one of many tiny fringe political parties.) PEople would be intelligent enough to understand that, one would hope.

BTW, I think it's interesting to look at old historic buildings and find where there are decorative swastikas. Places I've noticed:
- One of the New York City subway stations by Columbia University. (It's either 110th ST or 116th . .. I forget which, since it's been awhile since I attended Columbia, but I'm pretty sure it's 110th ST.)
- At the University of Georgia, the German languages building has floral swastikas on it.

Before the late 1920s, the swastika was viewed as simply a decoration, like any other subtle decorative pattern.
