15. Ahhh Yes... "Auntie Mame" and "Sylvia Fowler" and "Rose Hovick"
Those are three of her characters that I most love.

She's a classic!

I voted for kate. I actually think Vanessa Redgrave is the best actress ever, but she is not from the period.

8. She was a "Berlinerin" to be proud of
I'm stil amazed that she chose to return in her will. The city treated her like a pariah after the war; only recently people came to respect her.

(She took US citizenship and uniform during the war; returned both later)

5. Susan Hayward
Always my favorite. Thought about changing my name to "rae smith" (all lower case letters....very chic) after I saw "Back Street".

7. Vivien Leigh (although her characters were annoying as hell)
Her performances in Streetcar and GWTW make her the best of that era.

10. Add Patricia Neal, Carol Lombard,
and Mae West had a lot of talent even though she always played the same role basically.

I voted for Barbara Stanwyke....very talented and versatile....Carole Lombard is my favorite, though...only 34 when she died, could have been the greatest if she lived longer...I also like Joan Fontaine and Greer Garson...

14. Your Forgot: NORMA SHEARER!!!... NORMA SHEARER!!!
No "best of" poll can be complete or inclusive without Norma. She was the QUEEN before ANY OF THEM.

For pete's sake, she was married to Irving Thalberg!!! She was one of the FEW who successfully made the transition between silent movies and talking movies.
