1. I. . .I ... I don't know |

what to say.
It's just so. . . beautiful
So, what the heck is that for anyway?

3. Think of it as your radio's stomach |

Electronic gizmos generally don't like alternating current. They want direct current. This, and a few diodes, turn one into the other.

I've even got some LC filters! My only question is why?

5. That's not quite the way I learned it. |

These days, we replace the second capacitor with a Zener diode. It makes the voltage less sensitive to current fluctuations.

6. What can I say? I'm ancient. |
|
I learned electronics in the late 70's, on textbooks that were already out of date.
Hell, I built a superheterodyne vacuum tube radio in 1980!

7. Heck with that Zener stuff! |

Throw a friggin' Voltage Regulator in there in place of that first resistor.
Put yourself a nice big electrolytic cap at C1 (I liked 4700uF caps, but now'days they've got one-farad caps in small packages, so I'd probably use one of those), a voltage regulator at R1, the biggest tantalum electrolytic you can get your hands on at C2 and say to hell with the RL.
Now! If you really want nice clean power, put decent-size caps at C1 and C2--4700uF will do on both sides of the regulator--a voltage regulator at R1 and a stack of NiCads at RL. You are left with extremely stable power--back in the day when a Gallium Arsenide FET was both delicate and $100 and you needed two of them for a 4200MHz low-noise amplifier that gave you enough gain, you did this if you didn't want your GaAs-FETs to go pop.

10. Ack - that brings back memories |
|
Didn't you use to have to use negative feedback up the wazoo for those things in order to clamp the gain and afford stability?
(I am now relearning tube theory, since my amps are single ended triode - even the rectifiers are tubed!)

Too much output ripple, especially for that full wave bridge.
Perhaps a series of smoothing caps will be in order?
I learned electronics back in '80, from The Connecticut School of Electronics (CSE), which of course was known by all as C(an't) S(tand) E(lectronics).
