Neil Young: Love him or hate him? |
|
I love him for his songwriting, mostly. When he (and I) was younger, I really liked his voice. Haven't heard him perform lately.

5. Love him through the good and the bad |
|
he's turned out such an amazing body of work it would stand to reason there are soem clunkers - but over all its great stuff. Been buying his stuff and finding every tape of live stuff I can for years - since I was 17 and that was in the 70's.

Started in the '60s with Buffalo Springfield, strong set of solo albums and CSNY in the '70s, came back in the late '70s with Rust Never Sleeps (his tribute to the then new punk scene), toured with Pearl Jam in the 90s.

He is my absolute favorite, met my wife at one of his concerts.
He's just as good now as he was back in the day.
We're going to see CSNY this summer.

I'm recording a band right now with a singer/guitarist/writer who is influenced by Neil among others. Some of the stuff they do is like a real breath of fresh air after years of tortous "rock" that has been so popular.

13. Anybody read "Shakey?" |

Neil Young's biography. It got a mixed review by an NPR book critic. I was wondering if it was worthwhile.

The chapter on "On the Beach" itself is worth the price of admission.
And there's also fine info on the lost years, his marriage, his drug use, his epilepsy, and the Geffen stretch, too. The author is pretty unforgiving at times, thank god.

19. In the book he's about as likable as Dubya..or maybe Rove... |
|
...overall, a genius who doesn't know how to treat his friends...or his women...or his audience...but likes to sit in his barn and play with his model trains.
Personally, I just listen to the music and try not to think about the book. If only 25% of it is true, he's a real prick.
The reason the book pretty much "stops" abruptly...Young had second thoughts about cooperating and tried to keep it from being published. Supposedly (if you want to believe the book) he's surrounded by some pretty hard-core thugs who like to "protect" him from people who say bad things about him...also like Dubya.

14. Great songwriter and performer - political dunderhead |
|
Neil Young supported both Reagan and the Patriot Act. Now he writes another idiot story record (can't wait for the next "Human Highway", can you?) called Greendale that paints a very grim picture of the big brother society Neil endorsed publicly and repeatedly in his own post-9/11 hysteria.
Love "Rust Never Sleeps" the most of the albums.

amazing talent. His songs have a way of insinuating themselves into your brain where they take up residence.
Rust Never Sleeps is a masterpiece of Rock and Roll.

17. Love him.....with conditions. |
|
Love especially his early seventies "noisy" period ("Time Fades Away"/"On the Beach"/"Tonight's the Night") and his early nineties "noisy again" period ("Arc/Weld"/"Ragged Glory"/"Freedom"), and occasional moments in between.
However, since the emergence of Dinosaur JR, there have been FAR FAR too many indie rock/alt-country musicians ripping off his style....So that now, when I hear him, I hear where Wilco, The Thrills, et al. learned their stuff instead of Neil himself. And so, I'm kinda tired of that sound.

I really like a lot of his songs He dresses poorly Arguably the ugliest man in rock (and that's saying something) (seems to be a bit of a prick as a person)
