What is rye whisky?

I've seen plenty of John Wayne movies where rye is drank, but in my years of drinking (mostly beer and wine) I have not come across rye. Am I missing something obvious? Do they still sell the stuff? Are any of the modern brands still called rye?

I could be wrong, but I don't think I am, but I'm sure "rye whisky" does not exist. I think only "rye whiskey" exists, since I don't think Scotland or Ireland make it.
