Sweet victory over my flooring contractor today ... |
|
We closed on our downtown Greenville, SC, condo on 3/31. We planned on moving in on 5/3. However, the hardwood floors in the two bedrooms were severely splintered. After a month of hollow promises from the flooring contractor, I called a meeting at the condo today. Present were the developer (a good guy), the builder (another good guy), my real estate agent (thank goodness for her), another woman who is involved in decorating advice, a floor re-finisher, a flooring supplier, and two pissed dudes from the flooring contractor. We debated for 90 minutes. My decorator and real estate agent bolstered my arguments. The decorator blew them out of the water several times.
In the end, I got more than I had originally asked for. Both bedrooms will get new floors. Then the re-finisher (who is an artist with hardwoods) will refinish the entire condo, and use a final-finish product called "Traffic," which is much better than the original floors' finish. "Traffic" is much harder, a plus with two fairly large dogs. I looked at another unit today that the re-finisher had done and the floors were absolutely beautiful. It was 1000% better than the original hardwood finish in these new condos.
Cost to me? Z-E-R-O! And they are pulling their best installer off another job to do my place early next week so that the re-finisher can get in and out by 6/12. Meanwhile, they are putting Dr. DemoTex up in the downtown Hyatt for the nights she will be in town.
All this because they lied. And they tried to foist the damaged goods on us. Naughty, naughty boys!

From Mrs/Dr DemoTex. She is pissed that we have been denied use of a brand new, and rather costly condo, for over two months now.

I like a woman who won't take crap from anyone! Way go go Mrs/Dr. DemoTex! BTW, where are you all actually living then? If your condo is not habitable?

4. The dogs and I are in the mountain house, 50 miles away (Brevard, NC). |

Dr. D has an office in Greenville, but has been doing most of her time in her Chicago office and at client sites. She has only used her Greenville office three times since moving in on 5/3. The boxes are still stacked to the ceiling.
She can always stay at her mother's in G'ville, but we felt that she might be wearing that welcome thin. That's why we insisted on the hotel room until the floors are finished.
She will fly into Greenville late tonight and spend the night at the Hyatt (which happens to be one block from our condo). I'll run down to G-ville tomorrow for a final meeting to pick out the flooring, and then we will both come back to the mountain tomorrow afternoon.
Typical of her schedule, she will leave Sunday afternoon for a few days in her Dallas office. I get dizzy trying to keep up with her. She loves it, though. Having traveling jobs has kept us married for 30 years, too.
