Computer buffs - a question
I use windows 2000 professional and I cannot display my security folder. It is in the control panel under Administrative Tools. When I double click it it comes up and opens up. When I try to open users rights assignments it says IT CANNOT BE DISPLAYED DUE TO AN UNKNOWN REASON. How can I get it back ? I want to change something different in users rights assignments. I don't want to reinstall the entire OS. That takes too long. Does anyone know ?

1. You might have to boot into safe mode
F8 on bootup, and log in as an administrator to access the files. From there you should be able to set permissions so you can access it on normal bootup.

4. I can access it alright.
I am the windows administrator for this system. I have used it before many times. My system is NFTS and it says the administrator and the system can access this security folder. I open it up but it will not display user rights assignments for some reason.

2. Have you tried it from Safe Mode?
Does your user account have administrative privileges? Have you successfully accessed it before (I assume yes and yes)? Have you done a full virus scan lately? Have you installed any questionable programs lately (system file corruption)?

Just a few steps in the detective process... Good luck!

3. am not up on newer systems there used to be an easy way to get into BIOS
Edited on Mon Jun-07-04 12:42 AM by DEMVET-USMC
I think if you are quick enough there still is. Hit the Del key before windows loads and you are in. You are not able to use a mouse but can navigate the system with the key board and change things such as you mentioned unless you are locked out by some supervisor. If you bought a used computer, format C: AND START ALL OVER. I have done it so many times It does not shake me up too much. If you have some back up discs it will help a lot. ...Oscar

5. With Win2000 it should not be that hard, during boot up when a message
appears saying saying press del to enter BIOS do so. To get into any particular aspect of BIOS you can move up or down with the up or down keys. To enter a site press enter, use yhe sme directional keys to navigate site and press the y key to execute a change and the escape key to get out of any of the sites threre. There should be an option to exit and I think you just press enter to access it and y to exit. I t is fairly self explanitary. ...Oscar

8. There are a couple of ways. Load the disc into your CD-ROM. If Win2000
has system file checker [ AN EASY WAY TO FIND OUT IS: click start, then run, in the space provided type: sfc and press OK. If the program is there the window will load. At this point you may want to first run the checker for altered or deleted files. If the date the file was altered or deleted corresponds to the date the problem started select the restore file function. Most files can be restored from either D:/Win2000 or C:/WINDOWS/SYSTEM. Pay close attention to the date the file was altered or deleted. The date should correspond to the date you started having trouble. You can also browse the disc in THE CD-ROM or YOUR HARD DRIVE which is usually drive C:/ UNLESS you have added another hard drive and now have 2. It`s a good thing to learn about as most files can be restored using: system file checker. That stuff about BIOS would only apply if someone ,such as a supervisor locked you out, If you bought it new there is no reason to suppose or need to enter BIOS.Good luck, let me know how you or doing or if you have other questions. 11. Please get back to me, there are things I have to know before I can
be of any real help. Don`t do anything you are not familiar with, without giving me some more specifics. The reason I had to reload Windows as many times as I have is that I screwed things up so bad I had no other choice. You may have a virus or other such nasty. I would need to know if you have an updated program such as spybot to know this and on and on. I want to help but I sure don`t want to harm.Oscar

13. I know it's not a spyware thing.
I run adaware on startup every time. I have Norton Systemworks. I believe what happened is when I was in Chicago someone here at the house set my computer up to allow remote access. I have a good idea who it is too. I think they changed the security settings to allow this computer to be accessed from the network and then hid or renamed the security folder. When I start up it checks security settings so I know there is a security folder. When I do properties on the security folder it has 0 bytes. Does this help ?

15. those are 2 of the best programs available. So lets rule out viruses etc.
unless some thing shows up to indicate otherwise. Now, was this security program you are unable to access a part of the win2000 disc or a separate disc. also, did you enter yourself as a user lately which would have made you another user event though it is your computer. You can find out by clicking start-programs- click:windows explorer a tree will open up showing how your programs are arranged. when I say open I mean for you to click onto any plus signs and they will become minus signs + and -. now the path is C: \Windows\All Users\Application Data \Profiles\All Users and if you are listed there your name our something you typed in as A secondary user; THAT IS WHAT YOUR PROBLEM IS. I HAVE TO KNOW THIS BEFORE I can be of any more help. every \ indicates a + sign, click it and it will become a - sign and open up what is below it. So get clicking and tell me what you find out. ...Oscar

9. IMPORTANT READ , when you first looad the disc into the CD-ROM
it will automatically open, simply click the x in the upper right hand corner to close it. The whole idea is too have it loaded to access if and when you want to while running :system file checker. Oscar
