Garciaparra ready after missing 57 games

BOSTON -- Boston Red Sox shortstop Nomar Garciaparra was activated from the disabled list in time to make his 2004 debut Wednesday night, 10 weeks after he injured his heel in spring training.

The five-time All-Star was in the lineup, batting fifth, for Boston's game against the San Diego Padres. Pokey Reese, who had been impressive filling in for Garciaparra, was not in the lineup, with Mark Bellhorn at second and Kevin Youkilis at third.

"We're going to play a few games and mix in a few days off," Garciaparra said before the game. "I don't know when those will be just yet."

Garciaparra missed 57 games with tendinitis in his Achilles tendon after he was hit in the heel by a ball in March. Although the team originally hoped he would be back for Opening Day, he was placed on the disabled list and did not resume playing until he went on a rehab assignment last week.

Garciaparra, who was 0-for-8 in spring training before the injury, went 5-for-18 with one homer on a rehabilitation assignment with Triple-A Pawtucket and returned to Boston over the weekend. But after testing his heel before the Red Sox game on Tuesday, he decided to play one more game in Pawtucket; he went 0-for-3.

2. Yikes!
And ESPN2 will be sending the game back here to San Diego. This is better than the latest Zogby poll!

6. Well, if Nomar stinks
like he did in the playoffs then he should be benched and put Pokey back at SS. He has save alot of hits this year that I don't think Nomar could have. I really think Pokey's hitting is going to keep getting better and I don't want to mess with it.
It was great to see Pedro pitch like his old self again last night!
