My wife wants a new GTO
My only argument against it is we're to old.

3. Get that women a GTO!
Hop in that "goat" right beside her and go for a spin.
Come on down to Midland and give me a ride too.
To old? Friend if you can still drive safely and afford it, your not to old.:hi:

That would be up to Midland. I'm about 100 miles south. If she lets me drive it thats a deal.

5. She's into Australian muscle cars, huh.
I hear that dealers are getting 10% to 20% over list. Yep, it'll cost you nearly $40K for a Pontiac, that's not really a Pontiac.

Want a sunroof? Not an option.

9. saw one the other day in person..
I saw one parked at the grocery the other day, so I turned my GTP around and did a slow roll past it. I was hoping the owner was around so I could get a peek under the hood. Nice looking ride.

those new Gee-Toes may be Holdens, but they are still bad-ass. 5.7L V8? Count me in!! They'll make mincemeat out of Mustang GTs!!

11. If I was going to spend $40K on a performance car.....
My wish list would go...

Audi A4 Quattro 3.0
BMW 3 Series
Nissan 350Z

Of course, if you're only interested in going fast in a straight line and making lots and lots of smoke with the rear tires (this really impresses the teenagers) then a GTO would be a wise choice.

13. if i had 40K to spend on a car..
it would probably be the Suby Impreza WRX. I would spend the left over cash to bling out the motor and suspension. But only because the Nissan Skyline is unavailable in North America.

18. My cousin has one.
He spent and extra $8K tricking it out.

He's on his third tranny and it's got less than 20K miles. It's not the cars fault......he keeps taking it to the dragstrip.

Why would anyone buy a WRX and then take it to the strip?

Nice cars though. I've actually been looking for an old SVX. Very rare but I've seen a couple of them lately.

20. youch!! third tranny on 20k?!
I have a tendency to baby my vehicles. My '93 Toyota PU has 152,000 on it and still runs like a champ. I also have a '98 Grand Prix GTP with only 60,000 on it. It usually just sits around during the week under the cover, as the 'yot is my daily driver.

21. Death to transmissions
Turbo chargers can be tough on trannies...the large amount of midrange torque is really tough to handle.

I'll wager a bunch of that $8k was on ECU and maybe turbo upgrades, which will exacerbate the problem. It's more work to increase the upper-RPM power, which means adding intake headers, etc. Plus, drag racing it means dumping the clutch at high RPM which really stresses the whole drivetrain...if he keeps it up expect him to start having to swap out his differentials in the near future. A racing transmission might be a good next step :-)

Tuned Saabs (many/most of which are turbo) have the same problem. There's nothing wrong with the transmissions except that it's not too hard to tune the motor beyond the tranny's capability.

The SVX is also well-known for a cooling problem in their auto transmissions which tends to make them die prematurely.

22. which is why i have no desire to trick out my gtp..
I wouldn't mind installing a new cold-air intake and cat-back, but I wouldn't make any mods to the supercharger, like a smaller pulley. I would need to install a cooler for the tranny as well. Too much money involved.

25. Bingo. That's exactly what happened.
ECU upgrades and dumping the clutch.

Thanks for the tip on the SVX. I'm only mildly interested, mostly for the novelty of the car. It'll never be mistaken it for a Civic.

My wife just got herself a new RX-8 after driving a Corolla while our daughter was in college. She is happy and I don't have to listen to complaints about the "boring" Corolla.
