Last night after the Bela Fleck and the Flecktones concert my sons and I hung around because we had heard that they frequently come out to talk to folks. After about 15 minutes they all came out and sat on the stage and we were able to sit and talk to each of them for quite a while. It was such a cool experience. I had a wonderful, long conversation with Future Man. He is going to send me some sample music for symphony he is working on to maybe try with our orchestra. I had a great conversation with Jeff, what a funny guy. Bela was hard for me to talk to, I think he is maybe shy. I don't know except I ended up feeling a little geeky (my problem, not his). Then the big one for me was meeting Victor Wooten. He was exactly like I thought he would be. Kind, quiet and very nice. I was able to thank him for the direction and inspiration he had given my son and when I had my picture taken with him I was able to give him the hug I had always felt like giving him (he is such a huggy looking guy). I thought it would be fun to share this. They are as wonderful as people as they seem to be through their music. Now I can't wait until the next time they come through.

going to need to tell me about your show. I don't know anything about that. A pic with those two, what a deal! I have adored Victor for so many reasons for so many years that meeting him seemed like seeing a family member you had not seen in a while. He accepted my motherly thanks with such humility just like I thought he would. I never felt really wowed by meeting them, it was so very comfortable. Much different than it often is with people of this stature.
Shhhhh about my son! He got really angry with me when I said that to him. I think you are right, they both are going to make it. Most likely not together (my fantasy) but they are both doing well. Thanks.

2. Cool, meeting Vic would be a highlight for me too. |

Did your son find out if his band is playing at Wakarusa?
NSMA, Wooten and Stanley Jordan playing together? That must have been a sick show.

He has another gig in another town. He had a great conversation about percussion with Future Man and I love Future Man but Victor will most likely be one of the biggest memories I will ever have. If I don't look too geeky (stupid, adoring and slack jawed) I will post the pictures when my son gets them developed.

8. Has your son tried the drumitar? |

That's a funky instrument if you ask me.
Also, has he heard any of the stuff coming out from Johnny Vidcovich, Stanton Moore, Terrence Higgins, Jason Marsalis and some of the other great Crescent City percusionists these days? Terrence and Stanton did a set at the jazz tent during the first weekend of jazzfest that was a tutorial on backbeat drumming. I'm expecting a soundboard copy of the show any day now. I'll forward you a copy as soon as I get mine.
We are going to see Theresa Anderson tomorrow night. It is in a very intimate setting. I'm psyched to see her in a small club.
PS I know all about the geeky thing. I met Stevie Wonder a few weeks ago and was a total fool the whole time I talked to him.

and thanks. I will send it on to my son, after I experience it myself of course. I am certain he knows all of those names. I can barely keep up since he is no longer at home and really I can barely keep up with the bassist who is at home, at least for a couple more months. They are swiftly leaving their poor old mother behind.
I love seeing these people in intimate settings. It is such a different and enlightening experience. Have fun.
I love your Stevie Wonder story. I am sure I would have a geek attack meeting him too! They must really get a kick outta that sometimes, all us mere mortals stumbling all over our tongues.
On Edit No he has not tried the Drumitar and I am not sure he is ready at this point to go farther than his set and everything his prof is asking him to do. I was hoping to get a really close look at it but it had already been put away, so had the RoyEl piano he has just invented. They are on the net for gazing at and I think the RoyEl piano is also in audio.

I am dripping envy! My fave memory of the Flecktones was from Summer 2002 at Wolftrap, when a friend and I blundered into buying 2ND ROW tickets the day before the show! Man was it great!
