Overused stupid rock cliches |
|
What are the most overused stupid rock cliches, to you?
To me, the worst is the "rambling man."
Led Zeppelin, as good as they are, did one horribly boring song which consisted mostly of "...baby, I got to ramble..." over and over.

8. actually..."rambling" is more out of the blues tradition... |
|
...the bluesman were poor, and they indeed had to ramble. I'll forgive this one. The rockers just co-opted it.

12. In Zep's case it was as much Tolkein as it was blues |
|
Mine's a tale that can't be told, my freedom I hold dear. How years ago in days of old, when magic filled the air. T'was in the darkest depths of Mordor, I met a girl so fair. But Gollum, and the evil one crept up and slipped away with her, her, her....yeah.

The lyrics for sure are not your typical blues! What song is that? I can hear it in my mind, but can't place the title. I love Led Zeppelin. They also borrowed heavily from traditional English folk music at times.

10. "The grownups, they just don't get it" |
|
As in "My Generation," or "Parents Just Don't Understand," or "Fight For Your Right (To Party.)"
Yes, I know rock is all about "rebellion." But it's still cliche. There ain't nothin' new under the sun. Whatever you're feeling, rest assured, the grownups felt it, too. Oh, by the way... you DIDN'T discover sex.

19. Well, that's where cliches come from. |
|
And I was keeping in line with the topic.
Yeah, it will keep on... actually, the attitude predates rock by several millenia. It's just so TIRED.
Kids! Grab a clue! Your parents know how you're feeling and what you're thinking better than even YOU do!

17. poor me rock star.... |
|
... those songs popped up in the late 70s, Segers "Turn the Page" (ok, on some level it is a well crafted song) and countless others bemoaning the tough life of a rock star.
Yeah, all that money and p**** for working your ass off while the rest of us were working ours off for nothing :) Fooey.

18. Baby, I'm gonna do ya good. |
|
Yecch! Like Bad Company's I-take-whatever-I-want-and-baby-I-want-you, or any Rolling Stones' lyric when Mick was pissed off at XX chromosomes in general. (But I love the Stones!!!!) Rap seems to have taken that over now, with thongs and booty songs, objectifying women in their videos. It's one thing to be angry at The System, and write rebellious lyrics, but to advocate rage towards females, who've been so marginalised in society, just can't be healthy.

I can think of at least five "different" songs which use that rhyme of knees/please.
This must end.

22. "Let the music carry you away..." |
|
Singing about music defeats the point. Flame away, but for every good song about music there are ten that make me wretch.
It's no different than books. There's a section in the library for books about books, 000's or Z. And there's a good reason why nobody goes there.
