Poll question: How do you pronounce 'Dookus'? |
|
This is actually a point of contention in my household...sad, innit? :eyes:
(For the record, I say Dook rhymes with book, shortbus says loot.)
And Dookus can answer if he wants...but only if he agrees with me. :P :D

I surveyed my household.
The answer, I'm sorry to say, rhymes with "loot".
Your answer sounds too much like "tuchus".
The name derives from an old pet python I had many years ago named Duke. Over time, I latinized his name to Dookus, and that became my online persona well over a decade ago.
All that being said, I'm oddly flattered that you're discussing it.

You're clearly wrong...:P
I'm not entirely sure how it came up, but now it's the reference point for all mistakes. "Oh right, and I suppose it's "Dookus" (said in the manner the person says it) too, right?" :eyes:

to have caused such strife in your household.
If it will help, I will grant you special dispensation to mispronounce my name. That way you can both be right.

To be honest, I've always pronounced it Duke-us. In fact, I've even started calling my friend's golden retriever "Dookus". His name is Duke, and I added the "us".

For some reason I pronounce "Dookus" in German, while I use a pseudo-American pronunciation for most other nicks  .

The "-us" ending for a nominative singular noun is almost always masculine.

The U-Declination allows the -us ending for feminine nouns. Example: manus (f): the hand.

almost always.
"Mano" is an exception in Italian, too. It's "La Mano". One of the very few feminine nouns that end in -o.

I really have overlooked the "almost" in the reply; sorry, it is time for me to go to bed.
Anyway, it is not really an exception: it is a regular declination; not nearly as frequent as the US-Declination (or the a-), but it is still worth to memorize .
