Please, stop me from going to IKEA.
Edited on Mon Aug-25-03 02:13 PM by tjdee
I think I'm nearing addiction status.

Side tables for 10 bucks! Frying pans for 2 bucks! Bendy bears and a million cool lamps! Cinnamon buns (sigh, no more for me though) and meatballs! And a whole showroom where you can sit on their inexpensive items and wish you had more money to give them, yikes!

The only thing I don't love about IKEA is that there are always a lot of people there, they're no dummies. Also, I couldn't find bedding I liked at all...but :loveya: IKEA... and they seem to be a "good guy" company....

1. Noooooo....
.....I was just on their website. I need a new chair, and bedroom stuff. It is a good thing the closest store is 3 hours away, or else, it would be all Ikea all the time!

Mmmmmmm...meatballs...

6. When I'm not there, I think about being there....
Oh no, LOL!

There used to be one somewhat far away and irritating to drive to, so I never went... but they just opened a new one, and boy... actually going there made a difference, ugh, especially in my pocketbook!

2. Got my dining room set from them
A real charming table and chairs for a fraction of what anyone else charges.

I just got their latest catalog and I'm itching to get down there. IKEA rules!

4. I bought a couch last week before I got sick for $120.00 bucks at IKEA
It was marked down so much I couldn't resist it but now I have to find slipcovers because it was discontinued and it doesn't have any covers on it but for that price I can make them.

I eat the Kids meal when I go there because it's a perfect size.

24. Try the salad with the Diet Raspberry Vinegarette on it
I can only eat about 5 ounces at a time or I would order the adult portions.

They use to have the kids plate for 50 cents or a quarter I can't remember but it was dirt cheap.

Also you have to get a slice of the Apple Cake. Oh and you have to get some cookies and an Ice Cream on the way out.

10. I love IKEA, there is one 40 minutes from my house...
And it's totally awesome. I plan to furnish my entire apartment in Philly at IKEA.

They are definitely "good guys" when it comes to business practices, too. Great employee standards/benefits, they use recycled wood, and practice responsible timber removal.

11. You all need to be in Hex Wrenches Anonymous
So, fess up: how many little hex wrenches do you have in that junk drawer at home?

At 46, I've moved on to the "real (read:expensive)" furniture phase. The only thing I lave left is one of those Tv/VCR stands with the slid out shelf, currently an acquarium stand in what I think of as the "Futon Room" (please where old furnitue goes to wait for the kids to go to college).

13. I've been going to Ikea since I was 5 years old! (and I'm 34)
Stockholm, Helsinki... Lausanne, Lyon. I've been to a ton of 'em. I still remember the thrill of diving into a pool of plastic colored balls. Hell, my entire apartment in France was done-up Ikea style. So much so, that I did have a drawer full of hex wrenches.

Unfortunately, I now live in Omaha--home of Nebraska Furniture Mart, the biggest furniture store in America (and part-owned by Warren Buffet)--so Ikea won't come near this place. It sucks!

One question: Why do Americans and Australians insist on mispronouncing it as 'eye-key-ah,' when it's actually pronounced 'ih-kay-uh?'

14. Go
Edited on Mon Aug-25-03 03:20 PM by Kellanved
I bought a huge closet last weekend - I was sore for three days after that. I dig the whole lego for grownups approach and the instructions are a lot better than even a few years back.

What really made me angry is that I had to drive back to the store two times; one screw was missing and one hole was at the wrong position (they had given me mismatched boxes). And I can't remember the last time I got something completely right there.
As we're saying : "Idioten Kaufen Einfach Alles" - "Idiots simply buy everything".

The downside of IKEA : the founder has an extreme right wing past.

16. Half my furniture is from Ikea
...all the dressers, the kitchen table and chairs, the entertainment center, all the bookcases, the CD storage towers, the secretary, the computer table...jesus, maybe it's more than half.

I can't help it, I love putting the stuff together. And it's nice to be able to afford half-decent stuff instead of buying cardboard crap at Wal-Mart or paying through the nose for fancy-pantsy stuff at a furniture store.

My husband and I used to go there for their veggie lasagna and salad at lunch all the time. It was one of the best lunch deals around, and never crowded.

IKEA has a day every year when sales profits are distributed to workers,I would save up to buy on that day. There are no IKEA in Dixie,I will be in Pittsburgh in October and can pick IKEA or Warhol Museum and cannot decide. They had a house magazine called IKEA SPACE which lasted about a year.BBC Good Homes magazine mixes IKEA and High Street,http://www.bbcamerica.com/affiliates/magazines/bbc_homes.jsp

30. New IKEA 15 min away from us (College Park MD)
Edited on Tue Aug-26-03 12:07 PM by unidentifiedbassplay
Not only did Ms. UBP and I go there two Sundays ago, we took a 2-year old with us - and survived. (Ms. Charlotte liked it a lot, and slept very well indeed on ther drive home.)

I tend to take very seriously their catalog instruction which recommends you to Make a Plan before you go into the place. Even so I needed a long lunch and a breather so as to keep going.

on edit: more typos. Hand me the cat-o-nine-tails, please...

27. Went to a friend's apartment for dinner last night
Took the nickel tour of the place. Looked around and asked, "Another loyal IKEA customer?" "Oh yeah, they're great!"

IKEA is rough on the senses, though. I discovered that the trick to surviving a trip to IKEA is to sit down and have a cup of coffee and an apple slice after about two hours. If I go too long, I have a screaming breakdown in the aisles.

31. Ikea Rules!
And they are a fantastic, worker friendly company. They have one day a year where all the profits from the day's sales are used to give their employees bonuses. The average bonus is $2,000-$3,000. They give their workers health insurance and paid vacations and generally treat them very well.

32. I hate sawdust
If you buy any of their furniture, don't actually use it. It will break the first time you put anything on it heavier than a budgie feather.

It's just sawdust stuck together with glue made out of bear fat.

The diagrams in the instruction manuals are pornographic.

33. Really?
I can't say I am in TOTAL disagreement with you, as I own a couple of "cheap" pieces of their furniture. But, my monitor weighs a ton (it's an old Philips 17" job). My IKEA desk has not even warped on the top shelf. The crappy keyboard tray? Another story...
