So what have you been listening to lately? |
|
Edited on Mon Aug-25-03 08:33 PM by mvd
Mine:
Sherrie Austin - Streets Of Heaven: have always loved Sherrie, and while this one isn't as diverse as her last one, it's just as good - having a traditional/bluegrassy sound, even on rockier songs and ballads. She's also a very good country songwriter. And she doesn't preach conservative family values or anything ignorant. Affecting, down to earth emotions are represented.
Carla Werner - Departure: This is a vocally driven album, and the album is haunting. But even on repeated listens, it's a little too samey in its quietness. Worthwhile, but not an essential purchase.
Linda Ronstadt - Very Best Of Linda Ronstadt (great!)
Green Day - Warning (great!)
Jewel - 0304: I must say, this album is sounding worse. Not bad, but besides the ballad "2 Become 1," the stalker song "Haunted," and the new-wavey pop song "U & Me = Love," the album's pretty forgettable. Liz Phair's pop venture is better.
Also..
heard the full Hilary Duff album at a listening party - bad, like I thought it would be. More annoying than Britney. Nikki Cleary's the one with potential, not Hilary.

1. Okay, good jumping off point... |
|
I've been lurking here for over a year, and I guess now is as good a time as any to jump in and post. I have been listening to Fountains of Wayne, both the new disc, "Welcome Interstate Managers" and the previous one, "Utopia Parkway." Razor sharp lyrics, great pop tunes. Enjoy.

I needed a non-controversial topic to jump in, folks with zero post counts are often taken very skeptically, and from what I've seen, for good reason.
"Welcome Interstate Managers" is a great, cohesive album from these guys IMO. If you haven't given "Utopia Parkway" a try, do so. "Red Dragon Tattoo" is choice.

18. Yes, quite like "Welcome Interstate Managers" |
|
You'll like it. Very pithy. I'm not as fond of their first album, "Fountains of Wayne," however.

:hi: Welcome to the Lounge. My latest listening rotation has included:
Angry Johnny and the Killbillies - "What's so funny?"
Jello Biafra and DOA - "Last Scream of the Missing Neighbors"
Roberta Flack - "Best of"
Dvorak - Symphony #7
Saint Saens - Symphony #3
and last, but certainly not least,
Nitty Gritty Dirt Band - "Will the Circle Be Unbroken"
Gotta love the 5-disc carousel, despite the last selection being a two-disc set...

I made a mix tape for a friend containing cuts from "Roshni," Hadiqa Kiani's first album, and from "Best of Hrithik Roshan," a Bollywood musical soundtrack compilation CD. I also listened to some Inchtaboktables and some Dead Kennedys, but since I've come back, I haven't listened to any music at all, so it's been about 3 weeks. :) On the other hand, I've been walking around humming "Scotch Cap" (a medieval dance tune <Playford>) and "Bei Mir Bistu Shayn," in Yiddish because I don't yet know the English words (I did that on purpose). So go figure. :)

All various live recordings...Primus from 1992, Elvis from 1974, Hall and Oates and Porcupine Tree from last month, Springsteen from 1975. That was today. Yesterday was another live recording from the "Walk Down Abbey Road" tour in 2001.

I pulled out an oldie: Captain Beyond's Sufficiently Breathless It's got a song on it called Armworth that is really appropriate right now.
What was my arm worth when they took it away... Is it with my brother, is it with my brother in a meaningless grave?... It's only a stub of the original thing that was there when I signed up & saluted my king...

Lots and lots of Buffett. Not the new stuff, though. I prefer White Sport Coat, Volcano, Havanna Daydreamin', etc. Floridays is Jimmy's last really good album. I don't hate the newer stuff, but it's not the same.
When school's starting back up and fall is coming, I have to have my Buffett fix.
And on edit: It's Buffett. Two t's. Buffet is an all you can eat place.

15. Father Abraham in Smurfland |
|
In Smurfland there's a brewery Where beer is made from honey and tea It isn't sour, it isn't sweet It looks like beer and it tastes a treat Smurfs you meet just everywhere At the circus and the fair And in their pubs they'll give a cheer If they're serving Smurfing beer
Beer, beer, Smurfing beer You don't get drunk and it isn't beer.
That, and the latest Ohgr works, of course.

Always listening to *something*
Lately it has been
Amon Tobin - Brazilian electronica, for lack of a better pigeonhole.
Randy Newman - America's national treasure songwriter. Louisiana 1927 is one of the most poignant, beautiful and somehow understated songs I've ever heard.

28. Regina Carter's latest |
|
She went to Italy to record a jazz cd using Pagannini's violin. For violin fans, it's a Guanari del Gesu and the sound is low and deep, perfect for jazz.
