I called it all Coke. Because I was a good little Texan. Now I call it soda. Damn Yankee influence seeping down here. I blame the internet.
And Al Gore.

People who call it Coke (when it isn't Coca Cola) are just capitalist sellouts.

|
When someone in Texas says "get me a coke", you ask "what kind?". 9 times out 10 it's Dr. Pepper.

Here is my experience;
East coast - Soda Midwest - Pop South - Coca-cola - regardless of flavor! West - Soda (When I've asked for pop out here, I've been asked back; "Coffee?")
edit - To confirm ceile's coke = dr pepper in south

11. Non-choice "soft drink" is what we always call the stuff in South Carolina |
|
so I had a problem when I moved to Kentucky. The bagger at the Winn-Dixie asked, "Do you want your pop in plastic?" I couldn't function; I just stood and stared at him.
("Coke" was the preferred term when I was a little kid.)

15. It's pop here in Michigan... |
|
When I was a waitress I waited on a guy from England touring the US.
Me: Can I get you something to drink?
Him: Well in California I asked for a pop and they looked at me like I was crazy and told me it was soda. I went to Chicago and ordered a soda and got a tall glass of yucky water...just give me a god damn beer.

18. SODA! I was tripped out by "pop" in Minnesota. |
|
I asked my grandmother if she had any soda, and she asked "you don't feel well?" She thought I wanted Alka Seltzer, of all things! "Pop" is way too gooberish for me.

Pop sounds better. Soda makes me think of baking soda. :P
And I say this as someone who now calls it soda after years of living in Maryland. But I call it pop when I'm visiting back home.

22. How about a light-hearted "who cares"? Why? |
|
because it's very bad for you, it's grossly overpriced, it makes you fat, it supports pugs when you buy.
That said as a native born Southerner it's 'coke'. Coke is Coke and Pepsi is Coke, and I never drank anything else. I don't drink either anymore. These days, it's green tea, iced, with Splenda - I prefer it. Or water.
