13. it's nonsense
granted, the phrase itseLf "makes sense" in bush worLd, the phrase shouLd be "Let freedom ring"

but, to not further embarrass the bumbLing rube, the Lyrics to "my country tis of thee" wiLL be changed to incLude the new phrase. any reprints of sean hannity's first book wiLL be changed as weLL.

and this new materia; at this end of the net so if there is more to this story moof it all ears but just to say

"the phrase shouLd be "Let freedom ring""

seems to assume facts not in evidence not to mention
knowing what a nut like bu*sh might think at any time.

18. Honestly, I don't see what's so stupid about this
I've heard the phrase expressed both ways in the past, and a Google search will find multiple cites of both versions. Grammatically, they make about equal sense (actually, I think 'reign' makes a bit more sense - as in "peace and prosperity reigned across the land"). Of course, it's funny to think that Bush was head-banging to some WP music on the way to the meeting, and the phrase stuck in his head, but there's no real evidence that he was trying to quote anything in particular. So what's the deal - do you all really think this is further evidence of stupidity, or are you just having fun with it?

23. But why assume it has to be a specific quote, at all?
My impression is that "Let freedom ring/reign" is a phrase that has been floating around in the common consciousness for a long time, without any specific attribution, and has been used in both variations by a lot of people. Why assume that he meant one version and accidentally said the other?

There are many phrases and quotes, like your "bountiful" example, that are immediately recognizeable and shouldn't be screwed up; I don't think that this is one of those cases. A better example might be if someone said "Let's rock!" - you wouldn't automatically assume that they were making a hash of a 9/11 quote. (Unless, of course, the person was known to be an ignorant jackass...;-) )

Personally, if I had been asked a week ago, I wouldn't have had a clue whether ring or reign was more correct, or more common, or where either version had been specifically used...

24. obviousLy i disagree
one phrase is much more commonLy used than the other. (on googLe it's 36-1)

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&ie=UTF-8&q=%22let+freedom+reign%22

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&q=%22let+freedom+ring%22

aLthough, now that i'm perusing some of the hits for "Let freedom reign" i may be incLined to think he did do it on purpose. most of the hits center on white pride and christianity. was this a secret message to his base? the equivaLent of an aL queda website/emaiL stating "tomorrow we shaLL eat at the great breakfast, aLLah wiLLing"?

21. He's trying for a "Presidential moment"
Same with the Mars thing.

I'm reminded of a line in a movie (parody) about Sherlock Holmes.

"It's OK. Everybody knows you're an idiot."

25. I don't think it was stupid
but I do think it was calculated.

I think the whole "note-passing" thing was done to create:

a). A Historical Document, which, in the brain of Karen Hughes, should be framed right next to the Declaration of Independence; and,
b). A new Republican Party "BRAND" to roll out at the Convention in New York.

Don't be surprised if you see the Let Freedom Reign as a backdrop for the convention.

It was contrived.

26. contrived - yes
Like everything he does. Let them use the phrase; we shouLd constantLy remind the popuLace that the phrase is used by the american skinheads.

as for the historicaL document - they can frame it next to the memo stating "bin Laden determined to strike".
