Man Behind the Curtain may go national!
There's a guy in NYC putting together a compilation CD of anti-Bush songs, so I sent him "Man Behind the Curtain."

I called him up yesterday. He likes it very much and wants to use it, but he wants to add a rhythm track. He says most of the submissions he already has are hip-hop, very rhythm-oriented stuff, and he's afraid the simple singer-songwriter guitar sound will get lost in the shuffle. I'm okay with that, if it gets the song out there, but I don't want it to sound like dance music, I want it to sound distinctly punk. I told him that when I wrote it I had a vision of myself, only half my age and with green hair, and that the more it sounded like Dead Kennedys the happier I would be. (Maybe I should call him back and mention X drummer D.J. Bonebrake too.)

Now I suppose I gotta join BMI and start a publishing company. Shoulda done it already, actually. XNASA, if you're reading this, wanna give a callow youth (who's probably older than you are) the benefit of your experience?

4. You don't really need to start a publishing Co.
Just join BMI and put 100% for both writer and Publishing. The money will all come to you.

5. Spent an hour researching that
What it looks like is that I can join BMI as a songwriter and they will collect my broadcast royalties for me (after all, Broadcast is part of their name) but that they don't get involved in mechanical royalties, i.e. the record company's use of my composition. In this case that's probably not an issue since it's a fundraising project (to help defeat Smirky and repukes in general), but I don't want to make a decision now in haste that might compromise me in the future.

6. Right
BMI handles broadcast only. Just keep researching to what you need to do. I would contact BMI now, just to get it going. They will send you a package and it explains a lot.
