The REAL DU Demographic Map!
Thanks to EarlG for sending an extract of his membership database with all the thousands of records of cities and states. If you looked down at the US from the Space Shuttle, and everyone in DU looked up and smiled, this is what you would see:

(Sorry I didn't have time to map Alaska, Hawaii, or the rest of the world)

1. Not a single DUer in South Dakota?
Wow, I thought Daschle might be posting here. Guess I was wrong. (BTW, anybody heard from TD lately? He's been curiously silent.)

51. I noticed the same thing.
Interesting.

All other 47 states in the C-USA are represented, though. And I'm 95% sure we've got ppl in Alaska and Hawaii. I actually seem to remember that one of the big original Dean supporters on DU was one of our younger members from Alaska.

2. Interesting how closley it mimics US population distribution.
I really dont see any anomalys here. Its a good analogy to the actual population distribution/density in the US.

59. Um, no.
See, if it mimicked US population distribution, Texas would have more DUers on that map than New York, as Texas has 2M more people than New York.

But excepting Texas and certain states in the midwest, it's rather similar.

8. Not sure exactly ...
It drops a smiley based on city, state ... so theoretically two people in the same city should have just one smiley. I hope it's that way, because it means I have more Oregon neighbors than I thought!

20. One more important thing to bear in mind about the data
This map is based on DU donors - not on everyone who posts to or who just visits DU every day. Obviously we don't have cities and states available for everybody. So this is a representation of the entire picture.

That's me in the Philly suburbs. :-)

Interesting distribution, though...reminiscent of the "red counties, blue counties" map.

ON EDIT: If it hasn't registered my donation yet, then I guess it isn't...wow, I've got a lot of DU neighbors!

9. Any possibility of looking at the raw data?
The map's cool, but it looks like the population distribution is very even across most of the country. Does each smilie stand for a set number of people?

Sorry for being geeky here...

35. Arizona has a lot of democrats
the republicans who usually get elected are moderates, very few of them I would consider repukes (like J.D. Hagworth for example). We have a democratic Governor, most "Zonies" know Bush's policies have failed them, during the spring of 2003, Arizona had the highest Unemployment Rate in the nation because of Tech Jobs going overseas. When Tech jobs moved to Phoenix in the 1940's, Phoenix really boomed economically, and grew in population as well as the whole State.

Washington State leads the nation in unemployment. Both tech and Boeing jobs, as well as dotcoms failing. The figure hovers at around 7.7% or more.

44. One Slight Correction
Oregon leads the nation in unemployment with 8.1% http://www.bls.gov/lau/ washington has 7.5%. I said Arizona lead the nation in employment in Spring of 2003, it has dropped significantly since then. But tech jobs is what really boosted Arizona's economy, they moved the China but before that, there were massive layoffs.
