What new exciting field should I enter now that I've been let go
from my day job? I have 28 years with the same company and I'm still 10 years short of my pension. We'll be ok money wise I think. I plan on supplementing my unemployment with my severence pay and apply for survivors benefits through Social Security I'm pretty sure I qualify, my husband died last year and I have a 11 year old son.

But I've been thinking, I'm not going to want to sit on my dupa forever and I don't expect to get another job in IT paying what I made. Besides I'm just sick of working on and with computers. I want to do something fun, exciting and different. So, I need some suggestions.

What would you folks all do if you could do anything employemnt wise? Would you start your own business? If so, what would it be. If you were to decide to go back to school, what would you study?

1. I was a social worker for 16 years
Went back and became a librarian. You are never bored and your computer experience would be highly valued! Besides, you get to buy lots of books!

2. I would recommend the presidency of the USA
No experience or talent required, so you're overqualified, and you don't even have to be elected!

Seriously, civil engineering is a field that's fascinating and crying out for intelligent recruits. Also, have you considered charitable sector work? Contrary to popular belief, it's often paid, and you'd be doing good.

I personally work in journalism, and that needs even less training and altough it's not very well paid, boy, is it fun.

3. What are your hobbies?
I've been in the high tech industry for fifteen years. I'm burned out. I love animals and I love taking photos. I've been told that I'm good at it. So I am contemplating quitting my job and trying to turn professional, doing pet portraiture and stock photography alike. I just incorporated my own business today!

What do you like to do? What do other people tell you that you do well? Ask your son what you're good at/what you seem passionate about. My husband had to tell me that I should pursue photography. It was right in front of my face the whole time, but I never thought to pursue it.

Good luck.

6. I read, I've always read
When I wasn't working or taking care of my family, I read, I love history and I know computers and I like to bowl. I always wanted to be a lawyer but I don't think I have enough money in the bank go back to school for that. I would'nt mind volunteering but I'm not sure I could work with old people.

Want to know one of my secrets? I don't know why but I'm an old man magnet. I kid you not, if there is a 65 or 70 yr old man around, they find me. I've even been chased around a house by one. I've said to my self, self, ya know you could take advantage of the situation maybe have a sugardaddy or two on the side. But I just can't do it.

Maybe become an investigator? Catch cheating husbands, crooked politicians and run down deadbeat dads? I wonder what kind of training I'll need. what do you think?

9. You should be a librarian
Let the old guys chase you around the library!
By the way, there are special libraries--including historical libraries that archive....
I NEVER get bored. I love kids so I work with kids, but there is always more to learn. Look at the American Library Association Site.

12. Now I'm having visions
I could be a horned rimed, hair in a bun, Conservative librarian during the day. At night I could let my hair down, take the glasses off and become Nota, investigative old man magnet extraordinair?

5. Register for survivors' benefits - good until your son is 18
In fact you could have been collecting those for your son while you were full-time employed.

Then take a deep breath. Check out career counseling at a local college. Don't rush into a decision. And meantime, wow - you're in a great position to volunteer to work on the presidential campaign, and any state campaigns - and what better way to network and meet lots of people who may know about jobs?

Yes, the EXCITING field of Newspaper Delivery awaits YOU!

Do you have insomnia? Are you hideous in daylight? Do you drive like a drunken Bostonian whose ass is on fire? Then perhaps YOU have what it takes to deliver the news!

This message has been brought to you by the National Council For Encouraging More People To Get Out There And Deliver Those Papers And Don't Screw It Up Because We Have People That Want Your Route (the NCFEMPTGOTADTPADSIUBWHPTWYR.)

Someone with your experience would be great for the classroom. And I know you said you didn't want to do anything in IT but more and more districts are looking for tech savy people. Here is my district's IT site: http://www.irvingisd.net/technology/

17. Organic farming
When the oil's gone and the lower 48 has turned into a barren wasteland, your little farm in Alberta will give you plenty of food to live on.

Seriously.

21. Have you considered fighting crime as a masked crusader?
You need to think of a theme, and of course you will need some special power or technology. You also need to look good in spandex and have a special mode of travel (you can't just drive your toyota) :)

22. No, but I was thinking about going into the "man Training" business
Edited on Wed Jul-07-04 11:28 AM by notadmblnd
I know there's not one now, but it could happen. I do have considerable experience in the field. I successfully trained men to put down toilet seat after use. I've also had success in getting them to sit on the pot if they can't hit that little hole. I've had success in getting them to share the chores. Ironing and cooking included. And especially important is the training in "that look". You know the one... the look you get that tells you to just leave the room and not say a word. If you want to live that is. I could do it in a costume, not the spandex though. I'm thinking a nice leather bustier, fishnet stockings and 4 inch heels and a whip.

On edit: my special mode of transportation.... my broom!

Find a way to do that and get paid.

Life is too short to go from one soul-sucking job to the next.

Edited on Wed Jul-07-04 04:57 PM by notadmblnd
I'm thinking about lots of things.. I could take seniors over the border for their meds. I'm about 30 miles north of Canada. I can take 4 at a time, 2 or 3 times a day. what would be a fair/affordable price to charge for a service like this? I could trade my mom my SUV for her minivan and take 7.
