A mortgage foreclosure on a home and property in Colfax has created the need to find homes for 27 cats.
Lafayette real estate agents Lynn Tumey and Nikki Benner are working with the North Central Indiana Spay and Neuter agency to find people interested in adopting the cats, which vary in age and type.
"It's an awfully large number of cats," said Tumey, who already has four cats and a dog but has never been involved in such a case. "We've had a couple situations with just a few animals, and mostly dogs. But never this many animals."
Tumey and Benner, who work at ERA Property Connections, had been working with Cindy Shelley, the landowner, and lender Countrywide REO for several weeks, leading up to last Friday's foreclosure. Now, the goal is to find owners for the cats as soon as possible.
"Twenty-seven is a lot for us, but we're suckers for hard-luck cases," she added. "And they come in every shape, color and size."
