A simple request.

Hi fellow DUers,

It was awesome to find this place; it was also a relief to find like-minded people as well as informative links.

My request: Can we refrain from the nicknames? When I first came here, I had NO idea who "Tweety" was. We are entering a very important election and it's equally as important that anyone who comes to this site shouldn't have to waste time figuring it out.

Jon Stewart was very eloquent on this topic -- we shouldn't disparage our opponents because not only does it confuse someone who might potentially be on your side, but it could alienate them as well.

Here's just hoping for more thoughtful posts. We need to win.

Would you mind just taking an extra minute to explain? Also, it would be great if you post a link, to cite at least a few lines from it.

And, for those who look for the goldstar and use it to decide if someone is worthy: Yes, I had one once. I've just been umemployed for a year. I'm sure there are lots of us.

7. Figuring out the nicknames and shorthand is really very simple

and it's part of the fun, it really isn't a waste at all & I don't think anybody cares about the gold star, the content of the post is whats important.

8. For one thing

I wouldn't have known whether you are a donating member or not had you not mentioned it. I don't ever check that. And the only reason I check post counts is to welcome newbies and congratulate people on milestones. I don't judge people by the amount of posts they have.

As far as for the no nicknames, I don't think it's too hard for people to ask when they don't know what something is. However, I don't like nicknames that attack the way a person looks.

just too many different kinds of people for all us to behave just one way. wont happen. and i gotta say, the anger i am seeing is productive and there for a reason, and generally after the burst there is a lot of good information that comes from it. thinking of the day reagan died, saturday, wowie......that was a tough one for me to watch on the board, but the week that followed, wow i learned a lot.

and the naming of people like tweety, just fun, and anytime, ask.......just ask. what i did and was fun

It is part of the fun of this board and it helps many posters to use a nickname rather than the true name of the individual. As one poster said, the individuals do not deserve to have their name's used. It is part of the rants and part of the language of the environment you have joined. It is easy enough to ask for clarification if you need or you can use the link another poster provided that has a listing of the jargon common here. There is also a website called internet jargon.

Welcome to DU and enjoy the discourse. Don't fret the simple things. Big things happening out there are enough to keep you concerned and occupied for some time to come.
