Senator Orrin Hatch (©NSDAP-Utah) is at it again

This bozo's rhetoric is almost an Onion caricature:

Bill targets firms that 'induce' copyright violations

By Grant Gross, IDG News Service MacCentral

New legislation recently introduced by a group of powerful U.S. senators would allow artists and entertainment companies to sue creators of products, such as peer-to-peer (P-to-P) software, that "induce" copyright violations.

Senate Judiciary Committee (news - web sites) chairman Orrin Hatch, clearly targeting P-to-P vendors, claimed his bill focuses on companies that profit by encouraging children and teenagers to infringe copyrights. "It is illegal and immoral to induce or encourage children to commit crimes," Hatch, a Utah Republican, said in a statement. "Tragically, some corporations now seem to think that they can legally profit by inducing children to steal. Some think they can legally lure children into breaking the law with false promises of 'free music.'"

The Recording Industry Association of America (news - web sites) (RIAA (news - web sites)) welcomed the legislation...

He should wear this armband:

companies that produce cassette tapes as well. He might as well indict every company that ever manufactured a cassette deck.

What a dumbass.

3. I wish this was only a Rethug thing
Dashcle and Leahy are cosponsering this bill. The DMCA passed unanimously too, so I guess I shouldn't be too surprised. There isn't a bill so bad that our Senators wouldn't vote for it if the RIAA told them too.

5. It's a shame too
I'm to understand that otherwise Fritz is actually a decent Senator, but how can you vote for someone who would criminalize owning a computer?

OK, that was an alarmist statement with no backing, but I feel it in the air as some horrible "compromise" solution that'll come out of the whorehouse ... oops! I mean Congress.

on edit: my apologies to the sexworkers who read this site. I mean no disrespect to well-run houses.

8. Corporacrats HATE computers and the Internet
They give power to the People. That's why they're working 24/7 to annihilate them. Doesn't mean they'll succeed, of course. The way things are, they depend on the things to make their money.
