Woman's Crossword Puzzle Interrupted When Car Plows Into Her Home
<snip>

Problem was: Laura Sweet's garage already had a car in it.
So when a two-ton Mercury sedan went airborne on a hard right turn just past Stevens Farm on West Lydius Street, it had nowhere to go but through the 85-year-old retired secretary's tidy brick home.

Sweet, a slight, soft-spoken woman, was sitting about 10 feet away on her living room couch doing a crossword puzzle at the time. She walked away shocked, but completely unharmed.

The car's driver escaped with what appeared to be minor injuries, police said.

"I thought, it can't be a thunderstorm with the sun shining," said Sweet, a widowed former secretary for General Electric who has lived in the house for 40 years. "I knew immediately that someone had hit the house."

Of course, that was a bit of an understatement.

Where West Lydius Road hooks right, the white sedan heading northeast lumbered across Sweet's front lawn, between two pine trees, launched off a cinder-block retaining wall next to her driveway and sailed 20 feet in the air, shearing off about a quarter of Sweet's home.

8. That Happened In My Neighborhood!
Last summer. Guy came to the end of the sidestreet, which jogs a bit then continues east. Missed the turn, went straight up the driveway, hit the kitchen of the house.

Must have been loaded, since there's a street light right there and he had to be able to see the house.
