I just saw the most incredibly amazingly fantastic beautiful thing
I was stopped at a red light, and I happened to be looking upward at the sky, when suddenly a meteorite burst into flame and streaked across the sky in front of me.

It must have lasted all of four seconds, but in that time it shot halfway across the sky with a tail of flame hundreds of feet long. At the end of its journey it flashed brightly and simply disappeared. It was the most amazing thing I've ever witnessed (and I've even been close up for several Shuttle launches)!

Don't get me wrong-- I've seen 'em fall to earth before-- as a country-raised boy I used to lie back in the open field and watch the Milky Way in all its glory for hours on end. That's a sight no city-bound person can understand. But this was a moment of magnificence. A ball of rock and ice enters the atmosphere and catches fire. Big deal. Yeah, right. Until you watch it happen in front of you!

Fan. Tastic.

2. I can appreciate your appreciation of that
I take off for the desert as often as is feasible when we are expecting meteor showers and watch the sky light up all night...ain't space glorius?

4. My husband and I saw one a few months ago
driving home, actually in the suburbs. But we happened to be at the one little stretch of road where there are no houses or outside lighting. We were headed west and both happened to be looking up. A meteor streaked straight down right in our line of sight. We both gasped and said, "Did you see that?"

:)

5. I saw one driving from NoCal to SoCal last month
I'd seen so-called "shooting stars" before, but I'd never seen a meteor so luminous and so long-lasting as this one. It was really incredible.

6. Red Green Blue
All three colors were in it's tale, as it cut throught low dense Florida clouds. This was what seemed only a few hundred fee above my headt, crackling to silence. I hope I see one again.

7. saw one too - just by luck.
In the middle of *nowhere*, France. No city lights for miles. Had a couple glasses of wine, decide to lay down on the cool ground, look up at the sky - and as if on cue - zaaaaam. Just like you, I was struck by how weirdly long the light lasted - and couldn't believe that I happened to be looking up at just that time.

Thanks for the memory.

8. I saw two of those in my fifty years
Once while walking and the other while sitting in my car with a twelve pack and a drinkin buddy.

I know exactly what you saw because the sight is engrained in my mind it was so beautiful. They were both huge . Maybe about the size of the full moon in comparison. Ive seen two and Im an avid outside guy. youll always remember the sight, always.

9. I've seen the Leonids
But they don't compare, even in quantity. The only thing I've seen that compares is watching the shuttle burn its way across the sky as it made a night return about a decade ago I guess.

Missile defense? Kidding. Glad you had the experience... imagine getting it on film.... and posting it to the web for everyone else..

11. HAH! It was caught on film!
:bounce: :toast: :bounce: :toast: :bounce: :toast: :bounce: :toast:
---24 hours later, watching the evening news, I had the chance to watch the wonder a second time-- a Rowlett cop car camera recorded it falling! It has to be a coincidence of the highest order, as A) I was (and am) in Rowlett, and B) can you begin to calculate the odds of a camera being pointed precisely at the right place at the right time?

Remarkable how some things come together.

They say it probably landed somewhere in Louisiana.
