Best Buy offers computer help - 'The Geek Squad'
I'm at my wits end here with all the gliches and problems I'm having with my computer. I've lost files so programs don't work. I can't find the disks. Some programs won't open. Awww, hell just too much to write about of which I don't even know wtf I'm talking about.

Sooo, I'm at Best Buys the other day and there was this VW bug parked outside with an emblem on the doors, 'The Geek Squad' so I asked what that was about at the information desk and they gave me a pamphlet and told me about this service.

Anyone ever heard of them? What do you think, would you trust them to come to your house and fix your puter?

My son usually does all my computer work but, he's been sick and on meds and pain killers. He's the one who in a pain killer fog screwed up the machine in the first place. Not his fault.

Taking the dog to the vet for shots but, I'll be back. Appreciate any and all opinions and advice. Anyone in central NJ want to fix my computer - I'll pay you, BIG TIME!! :)

1. If my experience is any guide
most peoples "weird computer problems" are not that hard to fix.

2. HOWEVER
You have to have good people. not people that put A+ cert on their resume like it's something great.

(now I just insulted some DU'ers I'm sure)

in conclusion, I have no idea.

3. I've used their Walk-in service
Seemed to be pretty good. Once you get past the Geek Uniform. My daughter lost her himem.sys & 386.emm files. I think I erased them while cleaning out her windows\temporary internet files folder (over 35,000 files). Cost about $200 (fixed price) to reinstall windows.

I wasn't afraid about them coming over to the house, since I was going to be there. BUT, my daughter and pig pens have a very close association. I would have been totally embarrassed to have them come in.

6. No doubt - I could make $1200 a day re-installing Windows!
What easy money!!

Heck, even if I worked only one day a week, it would be the highest paying job I've ever had.

10. The only drawback is...
the white shirt and narrow black tie they all have to wear. Horn rim glasses are optional.

9. You are correct..
But it happened. After I removed the last of the files, I rebooted and crashed repeatedly. Could something have moved them? After 6-8 hours removing the Temp files, anything could have happened. Even the restore disks left me without access to these two files. After a long day of trying all I know (not much) and getting it less than half fixed, it was a pleasure to let someone who had an idea of what to do take over. They also removed a large number of spy ware and Trojan horses in the process.

Your screwed without the disks.. No ne can help you, find the disks and reinstall the programs that are not working.. If it is really as bad as you say reinstall win, and all your software..You have to have the software disks to do this.. Always kep those in a location twhere you will not lose them/

You would be out of your mind to pay Best Busy or anyone for that matter.. If you really need help search google groups for your problems..

There is your problem. Stop letting your son work on your computer without your knowledge of what is going on...

12. NOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!
Stay away from best buy. NO MATTER WHAT! I don't care if their "geek squad" is free. Best Buy is the worst possible choice you could make.

Look around you comunity for someone with A+ cerification. Check the classifides in your local paper. Generally, someone with a tech background will offer good (cheap) tech support.

14. Geek Squad is not owned by Best Buy
it is a separate entity.

I've never used them, but I know people who have and they highly recommend them.
