It has to do with wanting high school students to take first semester finals before the Winter break, but the extra weeks before standardized testing swayed many people.

The University of Washington always starts on the last Monday of September, which was great, as September is a beautiful month here.

here in Flagler County, Florida. I always think it is so strange how early school starts now. When I was in school - granted that was a long time ago - but we never started before Labor Day.

School used to start earlier in August but the tourism lobbiest bought themselves a bunch of repug reps and got them to change the law so that the tourism folks had a steady supply of cheap labor right up to Labor Day, depending on the year.
But ask a repig to make a law regarding the operation of schools that's in the best interest of the kids and they scream like sissies and get all indignant.

13. 8/16 here - the School Board wanted to start 8/9 but parents |
|
and teachers screamed. We got out just before Memorial Day. We lost a few vacation days the first semester to accomodate the later start.
