No hot lunches but we did buy milk. A dime for a small carton, about 8 or 10 oz. I guess. 1978-1985.

Obviously they were making up some margin costs on the milk.

I think I recall that milk by itself was 2 cents at one time and then went up to 3 cents. I could always buy an entire lunch fo 50 cents though.

I went to a particularly restrictive Catholic school k-8 where one was not allowed to bring one's lunch without a written note from a doctor. So, everyone had to buy and was billed monthly. I think the monthly bill was around $15-$20. I went to a less restrictive Catholic high school and usually brought my lunch, so I can't remember how much it cost there.

When I was a kid - public school, Phx AZ metro area, late 60's 70's - 35 cents (think milk was 10) My mom always made lunch - my treat was I got to "buy" once per week. I LOVE cafeteria food. My kids "buy" all the time - they HATE cafeteria food and for them its a treat to bring from home. I call it alternation of generations. They pay 1.25, BTW.

We had to buy lunch tickets from the school. They wouldn't accept cash in the cafeteria.

You could also get a hamburger or hot dog for 25 cents and milk for 2 cents, as well as an ice cream sandwich or popsicle for 15 cents.
To add some perspective, this was in the days when a pair of Levis cost $7 and my grandmother sold her 2-story house in a nice part of Minneapolis for $17,000. Oh, and my father earned $500 a month.
