What was your favorite school lunch?
I had 2:

Burritos: beef inside a cheap crackly tortilla, covered with this totally AWESOME institutional gravy (that I can't find anywhere ), usually with corn as the veggie (also good in the gravy)

Turkey tidbits with gravy: leftover turkey chunks in turkey gravey slathered over an ice cream scoop of mashed potatos

Isn't there a frozen food company out there makes a 'nostalgia' form of this for home consumption...

2. whole wheat rolls
I liked the turkey dinner too. But my favorite was when I went to a country school and they made homemade wheat rolls. Hot with butter. Hmmm. They'd give them to you even if you brought cold lunch!

8. Either pizza or fries
Neither was good, but most other regulars were completely inedible. The horrors of German canteen kitchens:
comfrey ("Schwarzwurz"), sweet casserole, Cordon Bleu, cabbage roulades, ... And the "Fruit Drink" :puke:

The cafeteria got shut down by health officials on a regular basis

10. We never got good stuff
Edited on Fri Jul-09-04 11:35 AM by cmf
Catholic school = no junk food. I do think that every now and then we'd get hot dogs, but the buns were whole wheat and nasty. I went to a gifted program at a public school once a week and would would occasionally "forget" to bring my lunch if chicken nuggets happened to be on the menu.

Edited because I forgot to actually state my favorite meal: my favorite school lunch was vegetable soup and grilled cheese sandwhiches. It was so good. As an adult I make my veggie soup to taste as closely to how I remember this soup tasting.

11. grilled cheese and tomato soup.
I loved the plastic texture of the government issue cheese and the buttery taste of the bread. MMMMMMM

12. Spaghetti and wheat rolls
Yes, it sounds repulsive but it was beyond yummy. Bland meat sauce over noodles, topped with grated government-issued yellow cheese, with a homemade wheat roll on the side. Dip the wheat roll into the melted cheese/sauce combo and enter heaven. Now I'm starved!
