Just configured Mail on four of 'em in the last half-hour. These machines are soooooo trouble free. (Yes...I have five. One G4 upgraded G3 PowerBook for road use, a Dual 533 G4 for music composition and graphics use, a Dual 800 G4 dedicated to digital video, a G4 550 upgraded Blue & White G3 as an AIFF audio archive for radio productions and a back-up A/V production machine, a G3 450 for the kids.) All of 'em speedy and virtually crash-proof.

Wonderful machines.

i have PC's at home, for me they seem cheaper to build and upgrade, plus, you can't really play any decent games on a mac.

36. Macs are actually cheaper in the long run.
This has been shown repeatedly. For one thing, you don't need to upgrade them at the same pace you do PCs. In general, Mac owners keep their computers quite a bit longer for this very reason, and that makes them cheaper in the long run.

Then again, I don't play games on computers anymore. I just don't have the time.

58. You mean
until very recently, you *couldn't* upgrade Macs, right?

Honestly, the only reason that you don't need to upgrade Macs very often is because Apple has a monopoly on their tech and doesn't raise the bar very often. Say what you want about PCs, but having AMD and Intel going at each other like cats and dogs is great for the consumer.

68. Strange.
Why is it that Mac is always ahead of those companies in terms of performance and speed then?

Hmmm.

No. Macs simply last longer. If you think having to buy a new computer every 18 months is a good thing for consumers, then, well, that's a strange assumption, IMHO. I'd rather use my money on other things. That's why I'll stick with Mac.

I like the quality bargain, and, when it comes to computers, that means going with Mac.

70. You have some bizzare ideas
who buys a new PC every 18 months? That'd be totally nuts.

"Why is it that Mac is always ahead of those companies in terms of performance and speed then?" -- Performance *and* speed? Not sure what the difference is, but sounds pretty good!

But seriously, it's not really true either. Dual G5s might be a little bit faster at certain photoshop filters than the newest Intel and AMD offerings, but I don't think you'll be able to find any objective analysis that shows that 1 single G5 chip seriously outperforms 1 single top of the line Athlon or Pentium 4. And since the rest of the hardware is pretty much the same in both types of machine now that Macs can use nearly all the hardware from the PC world, well, it's only the processor that makes any difference.

(Funny though I was really grooving on Win XP today)

You can get a decent mac relatively cheap if you shop for bargains. Emac is not a bad machine.

They just can't understand why we are Mac folk. This goes for the whole clan, father-in-law, brothers-in-law, sister-in-law.

The funny thing is how many times we call them to find out one of their machines is down, or their spending their weekend fixing it before it goes down again. Meanwhile, our old ones keep chugging along, doing their jobs while we kick it in the yard or someplace better.

24. Macs rock!
I have a mac! I used to have all sorts of PC's...Gateway, Dell, the garden variety just so I could use the windows operating system. After having to purchase a NEW PC every year (because the windows operating system would download nonsense crap along with the program I wanted to download...), my computer would freeze, crash, etc. Then, I'd still keep using my piece of crap PC until it would no longer display anything on the monitor and until I'd have to wait for fifteen minutes for one page to display! I have DSL and it wasn't supposed to take THAT long for it to load.

So, after doing that every year, having to buy $300 every year for a new computer, I gave up, got fed up, and decided on buying a Mac. So far, I've had this computer for almost two years and it runs SUPER quick, has a lot of great features, looks "high tech", the operating system just LOOKS better, and there aren't many viruses that can infect a Mac (which is good news here! Because my PC would get one almost every day). So, you know what? I USED to be a PC owner and now, I'm glad I ave a Mac! No fuss! I love it! And it uses UNIX.

underneath...

PCs are a kluge -- both the OS and the hardware. BUT -- I've made a bit of money writing specialized software for them. So I do like PC users -- because some of them have put money in my pocket.

But I use a Mac for my own use.

I don't understand how you get the idea that PC companies have a software "monopoly." Doesn't the very fact that the PC world is full of competitive software companies negate this idea? There are even lots of extremely high-quality competitive products to those made by Microsoft at this point...

And I chug along without stressing over spyware, adware, ect... It cost a bit more but I spend my time looking for porn and not removing crap.

The only games I play are Starcraft and Solitare. That is a non issue.

67. To add to the furor
Edited on Sat Jul-10-04 09:07 AM by Maestro
I'm a pc guy. I tried MAC and they are great for photo editing, desktop publishing and the like but alas I am also a gamer. And this crap about pc's being for repukes is bunk! It all depends on how you use your pc. I use mine to fight repukes.

And with a good firewall and two free programs, I worry not about virus and worms.

Oh and BTW, if more people actually used MACS then there would be more viruses directed towards MACS. Who would want to develop a worm or a virus and unleash it on 5 people's computers. ;)

Anywho here is some more fodder and notice these are not all supporting my view. See I am liberal and accept other people's point of view for those that enjoy the computer of choice of Rush. Oh I hear O'Leilly likes his MAC too to practice all his venomous rhetoric. And finally in one of my links there is a thread at a forum that claims that the evil one himself, Lord Voldemort, aka Bush, use a MAC too. So is it really the computer of nice liberals?

69. Mac people are so stupid...
that they can't even bash PCs. They bash Windows and are too stupid to know the difference! And hilarious part is that Macs ARE PCs. They have processors and hard drives and operating systems just like Linux and Windows systems.

And anyone who thinks Apple is a computer company is an idiot. Apple is a design company. Companies like Toshiba, IBM, Motorola, etc. make the stuff that goes into an "Apple computer". And their "Operating System" is just a dressed up FreeBSD. FreeBSD is fucking free!

silly Mac heads :P

71. Gentlemen Prefer Linux
As long as it's running Linux, I'm good to go.... It can be on a PC, MAC, mainframe, whatever.

73. I bought my iBook in December 2000
It still runs great, and I've tripled the memory, added an Airport (wireless) card, and upgraded the OS to the current version.

My desktop iMac, which is from January 2000, would have been the same, except that it evidently got bounced around in the moving van and suffered a hard disk crash. But once I replaced the hard disk, everything was fine--with the same improvements.

Before that, the last major problem I had was an inability to connect to the Internet, back when I was still on dial-up. It turned out that a freeware screen saver had eaten all my TCP/IP settings. I just trashed the screen saver, reentered the TCP/IP settings, and that was that.
