Poll question: under what political party are you registered to vote?
Just curious.

(I'm sure I've missed some. If you post the ones I've missed in the next 10 minutes, I'll add them to the poll.)

5. Why, yes. Yes it is.
It would've taken me too long to word the title of the damn thread, though. ;)

2. voted "no affiliation' cause that's how we do.
In Alabama, you just register. Not "as" anything.
When you vote in primaries, you ask for either a Dem or repug ballot.
In the general, you just vote.
I think that's a good way and surprising in this somewhat backward (politically) state.

4. In WI, you don't declare your party at the poll
At least this is my experience. I originally registered at the polls. The primaries that I voted in had all the candidates of all parties lisited. You could not vote for candidates of different parties though. This is all by secret ballot of course. I am sure that you can join the state party if you choose but this is not an option at the polls.

14. You got it right, Nikia
I joined the Democratic Party of Wisconsin (by filling out a form and sending them $35). However, I didn't need to do that to vote (or even run for office as a Democrat, although don't expect the party's support if you won't join).

That's also why there's no good numbers on "Wisconsin Democrats" -- the party is utterly voluntary, and you don't declare your affiliation at the polls, and plenty of people who call themselves Dems vote in the Republican primary, and vice versa.

6. lifelong independent until
this year's primary when i officially switched to Democratic. permanently. I have never voted for a republican but I always thought of myself as independent willing to consider voting for one. Bush has however destroyed the party of Lincoln permanently in my eyes and I'd vote against my own brother if he were to run as a repub (which thankfully he would never do)

9. No registration at all in North Dakota
Though I did vote in the Democratic primary, which by state law means that I either voted for a Democrat in the last election, or I intend to do so in the upcoming one.

11. Years ago registered as Republican to vote in a primary...
to vote against someone. Futile, of course. Never changed it. Allows me to harass party faithful who call as well as to skew polls in this NJ hotbed of Republican pinheads.

15. No registration in Washington State
Though I can count the times I've voted "Republican" on one hand - and even those only strategically because one puke was so much worse than the other (i.e McCain vs Half Assed Monkey Boy in the 2000 'Puke primary)

18. I am in NY, so it is much more important for me to vote in the
GOP primaries against right-to-life creeps, than in the rare Democratic primaries.

Also, it allows me to get mail from the enemy, which I can abuse the return postage things.

Downside... contacting my representatives, which are mostly Dem, they are not as responsive I have noticed if you are GOP.

19. Wow -- I'm getting quite an education. Par for the course here at DU.
Alabama
Illinois
Minnesota
Montana
North Dakota
Washington
Wisconsin

all with no party affiliation when one registers to vote. I've been registered to vote in California and Virginia, and now in Maryland, all of which call for marking one's party affiliation. (When I first registered in CA in 1981, I marked "Republican." That didn't last very long, thank god.)

But I'm confused about Indiana: mstrsplinter326 tells us that one must register with one of three parties (D, R, or I), while LiberalTechie1337 has written "No affiliation in Indiana." So, does that mean that there is a fourth option when registering in IN: D, R, I, or "no affiliation?"

20. I've changed a lot.
Here in CA, I was registered as a Puke for a long time, so I could vote in their primaries, and always vote for their fringiest fringe candidate. Then we went to an open primary, so I registered Dem. Then the open primary was struck down by the State Supremes, but I haven't changed yet, because I wanted to vote for Edwards in the last primary, to boost his chances for the VP slot. Which I did. ANd he got it. SO I feel better.

23. No such thing in Brazil
Here you just register to vote with the State's Electoral Court (TRE). Party affiliation is totally independent and totally optional (unless you're running for office).

24. I prefer not to have a party affiliation.
In Maryland, the Democrats dominate and there are some democrats that are as corrupt as republicans.
