The Frugal Gourmet is Dead...
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=514&e=8&u=/ap/20040709/ap_on_en_tv/obit_smith

SEATTLE - Jeff Smith, a white-bearded minister who became public television's popular "Frugal Gourmet" before a sex scandal ruined his career, has died, his business manager said Friday. He was 65.

Smith died in his sleep Wednesday, Jim Paddleford said. He had long suffered from heart disease and had a valve replaced in 1981.

-------------------------------

Fittingly, he will be wrapped in tin foil and cremated in a 375 degree oven.

4. Considering he was a pedophile
....a 375 degree oven might seem like air conditioning compared to where he is now :grr:

6. 375 for a piece of meat that size?...
...It'll take days. I recommend that several bunches of young, thin, firm carrots be braised alongside him...

7. Wait, I thought it was Graham Kerr with the sex scandal.
He also lives in the PNW and, I believe, was a host of "The Frugal Gourmet."

Now I'm confused.

15. And Haggens.
Pretty decent market if you ask me, a little pricey though.

Kerr's old show reminded me of Jamie Oliver, from the sixties.

9. I actually have one of his cookbooks....
It's pretty useless. The only decent recipe in the whole damn book is one for hushpuppies, which are pretty basic anyway.

We used to watch his show for laughs (his ingredients were ridiculous, unavailable and sounded nasty). But his assistant, Craig, was absolutely adorable and a pretty good cook.

14. I have never figured out what he meant by "Frugal"
"Getting the most for your money" is what I think most of us mean. But Jeff Smith ditched that concept early on. He decided that it meant "buying absolutely the best quality you can, because that gets you the most value"--which was NOT the kind of screw-you-poor-folks advice I was looking for when I was young, just married, and looking for a way to eat decently on a grad student's salary.

Also, he desperately hated most American foods. So if you check him out on how to make a frugal, gourmet pizza, he basically tells you that what Americans eat isn't the real deal and we ought to be ashamed of ourselves.

11. What sex scandal?!
Edited on Fri Jul-09-04 06:33 PM by HypnoToad
Was he less than frugal with other men, women, or children? :scared:

Just read the article... What is it with men who like to tinker with boys? For one thing, boys have got nothing worth tinkering with. I used to be a boy, one who was tinkered too... He's gone. I'm over it.
