What to do?
I have owned half of a 2 story townhouse(duplex) for 7 years now.

The attached unit has just been sold to a 30 something, single, party guy.

Once was once a reasonably quiet cul-de-sac has now become a party every Friday and Saturday night. This morning the bass tones from the stereo resonated until 5:30 am (maybe I should go out back and fire up the chainsaw right now?).

We have an portable A/C unit that we run with the doors and windows closed. This shields us from much of the sound but this AM was still thumping bass enough to disturb the peace.

One of his guest's truck parked in my driveway last night.

I have talked to him sternly but politely with no results.
The more they drink the louder it gets.

So is it going to be war with this guy?
I hate this damn it!!!!!

20. WE Did That Once...
We lived at one place for eight years. Neighbors moved in five years after we did. were there three years... partying, setting off fireworks on 4th and on New Years and Cinco de Mayo and whenever they felt like it... setting their dog on ours, they tried to toss a M80 through our window... MAN it sucked MIGHTILY!

We had the police out there several times, to NO avail!

So we moved. We left a very beloved place, a place that was *perfect* for us. It hurt us to have to do so, but for our own physical safety, we pulled up stakes and left.

One of our very dearest friends, and also a neighbor, contacted us about ten days after we had settled into our new place and told us the nasty neighbors had moved OUT three days after WE had!

AAAAAARRRRGGGGGGHHHHH! If we had KNOWN......

23. That's the kind of luck I have too -
Getting ready to move again due to similar problems. I'm going out to the country, so neighbors will be fewer and further away.

2. File a complaint with the police
Edited on Sat Jul-10-04 09:25 AM by salvorhardin
I'm not a big fan of calling the police for what should be simple disputes, but you've already tried talking to the guy. Most likely there is a noise ordinance in your area. Failing that I'm sure the police will find something actionable to charge the guy with after a couple of late night visits.

3. step one:
put up a tow sign in your driveway. (check to make sure your local municipality allows you to tow people at their expense.)

Step Two: call the cops when he's making too much noise. I hate to do it, but you have played the good neighbor card, loud music after about 11 is fair game now.

Step Three: start mowing the lawn at 8 am on saturdays and sundays.

Step Four: if you can't beat 'em...

8. Oh come on
you can be more creative than that; Call the phone company get his number unlisted and changed. no one will call him until he makes noise then you call and ask him to quiet down. Once you do this the phone company wont give him the number.

9. I Feel Your Pain
I had a similiar problem with a neighbor who had two barking dogs. His fence line was about 8 feet from the side of my house and it disrupted sleep. I would go bang on his door in the middle of the night and he would not answer. I did an address search on the internet and found his phone # - kept it by my bed. WHen the dog would wake me up, I called - he'd answer I'd tell him to get his dog...and he did. I contacted the city and was told for nusiance noise I could file a complaint with the city prosecutor's office and he would be dragged into court. Since he'd never answer his door I left him a note telling him of my intent hoping this would forever end the issue. It did not. I filed, he received a notice, and within a month he moved. Problem solved. I was sooooo excited. However the people who bought the house have a dog that has been a problem barker as well. I have talked to them several times. I have dogs myself and am very conscientious of their barking....my biggest annoyance is people who are oblivious to the impact that their actions have on other people.

22. This is one of my pet peeves
I hate when people allow their dogs to bark all the time. I have a dog, and I would never let her stand out in the yard barking when others are trying to sleep.

24. Good pun
I like "pet peeves".

You gotta hit these people where it hurts. When I was a kid, my father got up at 4am for work so he went to bed pretty early. The lady that lived behind us would stick her dog out in her yard from 11:00-11:30pm (prime sleeping time for Dad) and the dog constantly barked. The first couple of times, Dad called while the dog was barking to no avail. He finally got results when he would wait to call when he would normally get up. He only had to wake her once for her to get the message.

14. Call in reinforcements
I would imagine this guys behavior is a bother to your other neighbors as well. Plan an early morning mow party. Get a blocks worth of weed whackers out there. Crank up the barbeque's and have a breakfast party.

This will make it a little less personal for the guy and drive it home that he will get no support from those around him.

It is a little juvenile but Drastic times call for drastic action.

16. Letter--What do you think?
I stuck this on his door. He wasn't home.
I figure this is the last straw. If he doesn't "get it" after this then it is call the police time.

Don,

We are trying to keep our patience but it’s not working out.

Here’s a list from last night:

· Thumping bass until 5:30 am
· A cigarette that was thrown over the fence, not stamped out first. That is dangerous as hell. We could have burnt down with all the leaves and stacked wood I have back there.
· A white Ford truck w/toolbox parked in front of my car, in our driveway, for most of the night.

I hate calling the police but if we can’t work this out then what are our options?

A few ideas for solution:

Bass notes cut right through the walls. Toning it down and/or off especially at 10:00 pm work nights and 11:00 pm Friday/Saturday.

Moving the party indoors at those times also in order to comply with the City's sound ordinance.

No parking on our property. Next time I will call the tow truck.

Hope we can work this out.

Ted & Carla

Make sure to send a copy by registered mail, too. And run with that idea of recruiting the neighbors; otherwise, you'll be dismissed as a crank.

I am going to recruit neighbors.
When the cops and tow truck shows up I think I will be taken a bit more serious.

Thank goodness we have a thick hedge between our driveways.

21. Good for you! You are handling this well.
My family has had this battle for decades on our street ever since it became a rental district for wealthy Tulane University students, and since their parents and family are literally folks like Newt Gingrich, they think they can get away with everything... and they mostly do. We lost two cars (totaled from drunk students who crashed into them in our DRIVEWAY), have been vandalized and harassed by powerful republican politicians, all because we complained about noisy parties that go on endlessly until the morning. They shot my cat, broke the windows and mirrors on our cars had my mother's drivers license taken away for two years because they smashed HER parked car in OUR driveway while she was in bed. They are rich and we are poor, so they can hurt us very easily. At their parties, if we complain, the next day we end up picking up broken bottles in front of our house and on our porch, and sometimes our own trash cans as they love to kick them over onto our lawn.

When the police came, after one girl hit my mother's car so hard that it ended up 50 yards away on another person's front lawn, they didn't arrest the drunk driver (girl) who was clothed in a shower trying to sober up, but instead they THREATENED US with arrest for fucking with some powerful families. When another group of rich students moved in, they shot my cat with a 22, that got them evicted at least, but they came back and broke the windshields and mirrors on our cars. My poor mom couldn't afford to fix her car and neither could I so we lost them, and then I lost my job. The police would do nothing. When they smashed my last car 3 years ago (and left the scene), the police "lost my report" after the father of the student "paid" the precinct a visit.

Don't worry, I haven't EVER stopped fighting these bastards, but it won't be long before we lose the family home because they raised the taxes so high on our house that we are going to lose it when retirement checks cannot cover it. There are hardly any black folks left in my immediate neighborhood because the rich, white republicans are actively trying to exterminate the "other people." If Tom DeLay moves here, then I will sell what is left and leave. Thank goodness that there are many people of different races and backgrounds here in New Orleans that CARE about our uniqueness, that we haven't lost our culture to the homogeneous, white-bread, repressed society that has fucked up most of this nation.

but please stop with "white-bread" crap. There are some "white-breads" that fight corruption no matter of color. I'm sorry that "white-breads" are the ones that have hurt your living conditions but there are bad eggs in all races. Look at my pic in the gallery. I'm as WASP as they come and very liberal!

28. Holy SHIT!
Man, I am not one to advocate gun ownership but that kind of crap would see me sitting on the front lawn with a loaded 12 gauge shotgun and a very large 'trespassers will be exterminated' sign.

Of course, with the treatment you've been getting that no doubt means I'd get shot at, beaten, and then thrown in jail for the trouble.
