(chuckling) Remember when only drug dealers and minorities drove SUVs |
|
Edited on Sat Jul-10-04 11:23 AM by keithyboy
and fancy vans? I just had to laugh to myself as I watched troves of SUVs, Cadillacs, and other vehicles fill the suburban mall lots. These were the vehicles that my family would never have dared to drive let alone purchase about 20 years ago. It was common knowledge to own and drive those big vans, pick-ups, and sedans meant that you were somehow connected to the criminal element...mostly drug dealings, and everyone knew that "those people" could not afford those vehicles otherwise. I guess the wives and daughters of the "new criminal" the corporate criminals and thieves are taking over that market now. Cracks me up!
I don't mean this a flame bait but it is just a reminder about how fickle our so-called "civilization" is. How many things can you identify that used to be taboo are now quite fashinable and unaffordable by poor working folks? Including some foods.

1. Huh? When was that? Where was that? |
|
This seems like a strange, pseudo-bigoted comment to make. Sorry, but talk about a cliche based in racism and classicism. And, no, plenty of middle-class, upper-middle class and wealthy folks bought those vehicles back when, in terms of the percentage of SUVs, Caddys and such sold at the time, so I really don't know where you get this from.

2. Glad you cleared that up |
|
I am Hispanic and although I don't own an SUV I could afford to buy one and not by dealing drugs.
About your last comment, yes, a lot of "poor people" things have become fashionable among the rich. There was a time when lobster was eaten only by the poor and when you could tell a poor person by the tan they had. A lot of other things, I'm sure.

3. I am merely saying this thinking was a stereotype that my family among |
|
others in their stupid racist thinking carried as truth.
