Are nosebleeds common?
My nose bleeds for no reason at all and I have been getting them for two years now.

I can be driving my car, riding on a train or walking through the store and my nose will start bleeding and I can't get it stopped.

Are they common?

6. I think for some people
My little half brother and the rest of my step mother's family gets nose bleeds easily. My sister and I never get gushing nose bleeds. Even when I've banged my nose hard, I only get light bleeding that stays in my nose unless I blow it out.
I don't know if it is common for them to arise spontaneously in adults who haven't had a history of nose bleeds unless they change their living or working environment to something more irritating.

7. You might have a lack of vitamin K...
which is found in green vegetables. Do you avoid veggies?
My son had this problem and K solved it.

8. May need to get your nose cauterized...
I had that problem a few years ago. The Ears/Nose/Throat doc I saw
said that a blood vessel in my nose (which are very near the surface)
was worn thin probably from allergy related nose-blowing. After she
cauterized it the problem went away completely.

Cauterization not pleasant, but over very quickly, and it was great to have
no more nose bleeds!

9. I have sinus problems
It could be from blowing my nose so much.

How does it feel with they cauterize it?

10. They use some thing very cold, like dry ice...
I can't remember what it was, but the Doc just pressed it on the spot
in my nose for a couple seconds. It wasn't painful, more like uncomfortable,
and I sneezed a few times afterwards. That's it! As I said, well worth
no longer having the nosebleeds.

11. I used to get them a lot when I was a kid
I don't know why, but as I got older they gradually became less frequent and then went away. I don't think I've had one since I was a teenager. And another strange thing. I would usually only get them at night when I was asleep. I don't know what the significance of that is.

I would probably get it checked out by a doctor if I were you just to be on the safe side.

12. My Granddad died from Leukemia
Edited on Sat Jul-10-04 01:23 PM by testing123
I'm so afraid of going to the Doctor because they use to check me constantly when I was a kid because my white blood cell count was so low.

I have had pneumonia recently and my resistence is down and I don't want to know if anything else is wrong.

13. Are You Under Any Medication Now?
You might want to visit the Doc to see if there are any interactions between the Meds and your physical condition.

Lasix, for example, reduces blood pressure where the heart can pump more blood through your system better but things like coffee and iced tea can counter the effect by acting like a duretic to shed your body of the necessary water Lasix needs to function.

Always check with your Doc.

16. Info and links
One of the most common problems an individual may develop is nose bleeding (epistaxis). In the child it is usually the result of nasal drying but in the adult it may be a warning sign of high blood pressure. Rarely, it may be the presenting sign of a bleeding problem, a nasal growth or cancer, or even leukemia. Thus, any nasal bleeding which persists, recurs, or is severe needs to be evaluated by doctor.

For more with pictures of nose cavity...
http://www.entusa.com/epistaxis.htm

The most common reasons for nose bleeds are (1) trauma (for example, by picking or rubbing your nose) and (2) excessive dryness (usually due to dry weather) causing "chapping" of the nasal tissues.
Tumors of the nasal cavity and tumors of the sinuses can also cause nose bleeds. Danger signs that suggest the possibility of tumor include:
Nose bleeds which recur over the course of a few months
Nose bleeds associated with any of the following:
loose teeth, numb facial skin, a change in vision, a change in occlusion (the way your teeth meet), or any deformity of the facial contour

17. I have sinus problems and used to get them
For a while I was taking this nose spray that dried up my sinuses and it gave me nose bleeds almost every day. I finally stopped using it.

If I'm taking a nasal decongestant I would get nose bleeds sometimes during dry winter months or in dry climates. If I were taking sudafed or allegra and living in Arizona I'm sure I would get nose bleeds often.

It sounds like there are a lot of reasons you might get them from what other posters have wrote, but it shouldn't be a common occurrence.

18. I've had horrendous nosebleeds
Dr. ran a bunch of tests to check for the bad stuff like leukemia and cancer. THey came back negative. He's not a believer in cauterization. He told me to get some polysporin or petroleun jelly and put it up my nose to keep it from drying out. It really helped. Just don't do it right after a nosebleed because it will just open up the clot. Give it a couple of days to heal first.

Do see a Dr and get it checked out. You can lose a lot of blood with a nose bleed and can compromise your system.

24. Have you had any surgery in the last two years?
I had a sinus operation done to route my nasal passages back through my neck so I could breathe through this mask and not burn my lungs, and every now and then my nose would bleed....
