Mozilla Gains on IE
Mozilla Gains on IE

Study shows Microsoft has lost a percentage of market share to open source browser.

Robert McMillan, IDG News Service

Friday, July 09, 2004

A series of highly publicized security vulnerabilities found in Microsoft's Internet Explorer Web browser may be having an effect on the browser's market share, according to data compiled by WebSideStory, a San Diego Web metrics company. Over the last month, Internet Explorer's share of the browser market dropped by 1 percent, the first noticeable decline since WebSideStory began tracking the browser market in late 1999.

"It's the first time that we've seen a sustained trend downward for them," said Geoff Johnston, an analyst with WebSideStory. "We have a very steady trend. It's been about a month, and every day we have a steady incremental change."

1. Just Started Using Mozilla!
I love it. No pop ups. Much faster than IE.

2. Heh, I finally made the switch today, ONLY after I found an extension
that opened new windows in a new tab instead of an entirely new browswer.

So far so good.

3. Has anyone had any luck using Mozilla on eBay?
Auctions are almost the only thing I use IE for. Mozilla now even works great with banks.

5. Define "luck"?
I've been buying and selling on eBay with Mozilla for two or three years... but it doesn't have a feature to guarantee you a winning bid.

7. really...luck?
I just got off ebay while using firefox 0.9.1, had no problems what so ever. The much faster rending of pages helps against those bid snipers (last second bidders).

11. It Wouldn't Affect Sniping
The only thing that would effect that is the bandwidth it takes to go from submitting the form to getting the pre-body script (which doesn't render anyway) to load. Unless you're constantly reloading, that is. In that case, the faster rendering is even more helpful to snipers.

Do i need to install extensions or adjust something. On Mac OSX it works as installed on almost everything.

25. Try reloading...

I sometimes have a problem with the picture not loading, but I don't think it's an issue specific to the browser.

Whenever that happens, I'll either reload or right click on one of the unloaded images and "view image." Then when I hit "back" all the images are there.

10. Do you have a link for the extension?
I'd like to make it more like Avant Browser, where everything opens in a new tab.

I hate the multiple browser thing.

26. The Extension - Link

They're talking about the extension that captures "open in new window" tags and forces them to appear in a new tab. This affects things that you can't directly control by using the CTRL functions for tabbed browsing. This was the first extension I installed.

Anyway, it's called the "Single Window" extension.

You mean this is something to replace a right-click 'open in new tab' dialog box?

Wonders never cease.

13. Avant Browser is EXACTLY what I was trying to emulate
Edited on Sat Jul-10-04 11:29 PM by DS1
At first, this browser offers tabbed browswers but doesn't really use them, but..

Go to: Tools -> Extensions.. Click it. Select "Get more extensions" by clicking the link on the bottom right of the new screen. Navigate to the SingleWindow extention, download it, and restart Fireforx.

Firefox is still missing alias URLs, I've looked through the lists of extensions and haven't found that yet. Alias URLs = gg-goes to google, words=m-w.com, etc.

It's also missing opening multiple windows on startup, as far as I can see... Firefox is missing that..

14. Do you have the name of the extension?
I'd love it if Mozilla worked like Avant. Avant is great, even though it's virtually an add-on to IE. Does have more security, though. Plus, I use a dummy HOSTS file that blocks most malicious sites.

Mozilla's still a bit crude. I have it as a backup browser (Firefox) and use it occasionally.

The URL aliases are great. You can also create your own, such as DU for this place. Still in the habit of just going through my Favorites menu.

Also like the easy skinning function. I'm working on a few skins now, and will announce them here once I'm finished with them. Then I'll have to get working on some Mozilla skins.

16. However, I still have not found replacements for
both Aliasing of URLs, or Multiple Windows upon startup.

If Firefox can't open my three most crucial windows upon startup, *pfft* bye bye Firefox.

17. how do you do that?
I'm a total newbie and have much to learn. I've been right clicking and requesting it to a new tab but if there is a way to do it automatically I'd like to try it.

4. I Love Firefox
Tabs, customizable out the whazoo and you don't have to wait a month or three to get an "open source" problem fixed unlike Micro$haft's IE.

I hope the trend continues.

21. IE is really neglected.
And there is only one improvement that I have actually noticed in the new one. That is the pop-up blocker. It works well, but that's it. IE is so fat compared to this.

6. Mozilla Firefox 2.0 to incorporate machine learning
Just saw this over on Slashdot:
http://ask.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=04/07/11/0054239&mode=nested&tid=126&tid=154&tid=95

blakeross asks: "I will be doing research this summer at Stanford with Professor Andrew Ng about how we can incorporate machine learning into Firefox. As we work to finish up Firefox 1.0, we're also seeking ideas that will make Firefox 2.0 blow every other browser out of the water. People who come up with the best 3-5 ideas that involve the use of machine learning will win Gmail accounts, and if we implement your idea you'll be acknowledged in both our paper and in Firefox credits. Your idea will also be appreciated by the millions of people who use Firefox. We'll also entertain Thunderbird proposals. See my weblog post for more details; I'll read all comments posted in response to this story or to my weblog."

There have already been some fabulous ideas posted that I'd love to see incorporated.

8. I Don't Know About Machine Learning
But if you get the brightest professors, students and users on the same page, a program or browser can only improve with use.

Micro$haft dosen't see it the same way.

I have been using it for 15 minutes. So far so good. It's slim and trim and someone cares about it. IE is so neglected.

22. Open source means the same as peer review in science
It means that competent people have the chance to look at the work and point out weaknesses or flaws, and it gives the scientific community a chance to do the work necessary to make improvements. I use Firefox (plus Thunderbird for email/newsgroups) and highly recommend it to everyone. Apart from not being an easy target for malicious viruses, it offers a lot of very nice feature like tabs and the customizable toolbar plugin add-ons.

And for those who feel that making this change might be a technical challenge, let me assure you that it is as easy as going to a website and clicking on a link and then clicking again on the downloaded file.

27. Agreed...

Both Firefox and Thunderbird were among the simplest installs I've ever done.

The trap for a person who likes to customize is that you can customize these things endlessly. After I did the install, I then went about finding the extensions I wanted, trying out skins, rearranging how things looked. It's maddening, but in a good way. :-)

28. The only major disadvantage of Mozilla is..
slow startup times. Otherwise, I like it a lot except for when it can't work for some websites (like the Full Album Listening Party website or McAfee's website.)

29. There's an extension for that...

IE Browser or something related is what's called...

It gives you a context menu that allows you to open up the page you're viewing in IE if the page requires it.
