XXXXX DRUDGE REPORT XXXXX SUN JULY 11, 2004 09:44:08 ET XXXXX

TIME MAG INVESTIGATION REVEALS: EDWARDS LOVES 'DIET COKE'

The nation's top magazine leads the journalism pack on Monday with an in-depth investigation on the background of Dem VP pick John Edwards.

TIME magazine's Karen Tumulty has learned: John Edwards drinks Diet Coke -- a lot of Diet Coke!

TIME unearths: "The North Carolinian who would be a caffeine-and-sodium-buzzed heartbeat away from the presidency subsequently admitted that 'on a good day' he has been known to open four before noon, at which point Kerry pronounced himself stunned, seized the can from Edwards and started reading the nutrition label aloud. 'Sodium, 2%. Protein, John, zero,' he called as Edwards scrambled for the door. As for himself, Kerry owned up: 'When I drink Coke, I have to drink the real thing, because of the sugar in it.'"

Not to be outdone by at least nine joint interviews Kerry and Edwards have conducted in the past few days with newspapers, news services and magazines, all embargoed for a Sunday release that would coincide with the pair's appearance on 60 MINUTES, editors at TIME snag the quote of the week:

"This man drinks a lot of Diet Coke," Kerry whispers to TIME, in its cover story set for maximum Monday impact.

20. The Real Coke
Came in those little 8-ounce bottles back in the '50's and early '60's.

Cokes sucked after they changed to a cheaper sugar base.

28. The Real Coke . . .
...contained approx 60mg of cocaine.

<snip>

Coca-cola was introduced in 1886 as "a valuable brain-tonic and cure for all nervous afflictions". Coca-cola was promoted as a temperance drink "offering the virtues of coca without the vices of alcohol". The new beverage was invigorating and popular. Until 1903, a typical serving contained around 60mg of cocaine. Sold today, it still contains an extract of coca-leaves. The Coca-Cola Company imports eight tons from South America each year. Nowadays the leaves are used only for flavouring since the drug has been removed.

26. No such thing as REAL coke.... Coke has not contained sugar
but, rather high fructose corn syrup, for decades. If you grew up drinking TRUE sugar-sweetened soft drinks, there IS a big difference. All the non-diet soft drinks are now corn syrup sweeted, due to the big, big subsidies given to corn farmers and thus the dramatic difference in price over sugar. But, it really sucks, imo.

I'd rather have diet soft drinks. At least they are admittedly artificially-sweetened. Or better yet, no soft drinks at all. (But, I was just as addicted to Diet Coke as Edwards until I recently became concerned over the Calcium leaching effects of all soft drinks, given their phosphoric acid content. The risk of osteoporosis is definitely worth cutting back.. Ok, end of health lecture and time to step off soap box....)

11. Wow, now there's a issue for Rove
He'll probably spread it around that Edwards is a Coke junkie (omitting the word diet). Anybody who dares to point out that there's something in his guy's past to that effect (no need to omit any qualifying adjective like diet) will be dealt with.

Wow Drudge, thank you for this earthshattering news. Whew, just think, we almost voted in as VP a "caffein and sodium" JUNKIE. Sheesh, you would think that a man of Edwards intelligence would stick with something safe, like cocaine or oxycoten.

25. The horror... a VP that drinks too much caffeine. Heart disease and...
having already had multiple heart-attacks of course, is no reason to worry. Idiots.

Having seen how clever the Kerry campaign has been lately... maybe they are just wooing Coca Cola to get some donations.

products to avoid are adding up for the wingnuts.

Soon they will have to make their own clothes and grow their own food. Whoops, what was I thinking. Soon they'll have slaves making their clothes and growing their food.

edit: If their ridiculous fantasies came true; won't happen.

36. Bush is the real coke addict
:eyes:
next thing they'll say that true patriots drink Pepsi or some shit like that. Nixon, LBJ, Winston Churchill, and Boris Yeltsin, would drink whiskey for breakfast chug the stuff like it was water. That's way worse than drinking a case of Diet Coke a day. I'm glad Edwards is drinking coke instead of snorting it.

You can't get REAL Coke or Pepsi in the US anymore

since the bastards switched to high fructose corn syrup. But you can still get it in tropical countries and it's way better. And here's the kicker, it has way fewer calories than American coke too.
