Who wants to talk about funky 70's music?
So, I have some time to kill and a bunch of free downloads from iTunes that a friend gave me. I want to make a cool funky 70's CD and would like some recommendations.

My first three have been:
Shining Star - Earth Wind and Fire
Cut the Cake - Average White Band
What Is Hip - Tower of Power

Yes, I do prefer the horn-driven stuff.

Suggestions?

3. Bless you!
There's lots more TOP you might want to consider, also more EWF and AWB. Those happen to be my three favorite bands in the whole world. Especially TOP.

I'll start with TOP because I know them best. Squib Cakes is a classic. If you can get the 23 minute Knock Yourself Out from Live and in Living Color, you'll have some of the most sublime music ever recorded. Garibaldi's drumming, CT's B-3 work, and LP's amazing sax solo are out of this world. Also, Down to the Nightclub.

Non-TOP is Vehicle, but I'm blanking on the band's name. I'm going to be really embarrassed when someone reminds me. If you want to go back to the 60's, Aretha's Respect is a must-have. Also, Rock Steady. One of my favorite soul songs of all time is Back in Love Again (another senior moment on the performers. This is getting embarrassing :bounce:) Brick House. Play that Funky Music, White Boy by Wild Cherry.

27. OOOOW! One time y'all!
It's Saturday night and I'm just hangin' out,
Lookin' for a place to party,
I jumps into my ride and I hits the road,
'Cause there's only one place to go:

(Down to the nightclub) Ooh, the women be righteously ready and pretty,
(Down to the nightclub) We go bump-ty, bump-ty, bump'
(Bump City)

Sitting by the dance floor checkin' it out,
Watchin' the man with fast feet,
He's got the hippest threads and the bad boogaloo
And a big ol' bag of tricks.

(Down to the nightclub) Ah, ha, you can get what you want
If you know how to find it.
(Down to the nightclub) Ooh, we be slick, slick, slick.

Ooh, the people be bumpin' (At Bump City)
The joint be jumpin' (At Bump City)
The mamas be humpin' (At Bump City)
Hey, while the band be pumpin',
'Said the band be pumpin',
The beat be somethin',
Ow! One time y'all!

The night's almost gone and we're still goin' strong,
'Cause the party's been so hearty.
I hope it doesn't show while I'm drivin' down the road
That I had to much to drink.

(Down to the nightclub) Well, if you've got the dough, the liqour will
flow.
(Down to the nightclub) Tied on a drunk, drunk, drunk.
(Down to the nightclub) We go bump-ty, bump-ty, bump.
(Down to the nightclub) We be slick, slick, slick.
(Down to the nightclub) We go bump-ty, bump-ty, bump.
(Down to the nightclub) Tied on a drunk, drunk, drunk.

(Down to the nightclub) Well, if you've got the dough, the liqour will
flow.
(Down to the nightclub) Yeah, yeah, oh, yeah.
(Down to the nightclub) Look here, man, you can get what you want if you
know how to find it.
(Down to the nightclub) C'mon, C'mon, C'mon.
(Down to the nightclub) Yeah, yeah, oh, yeah.
(Down to the nightclub) Look here, y'all, the women be righteously ready
and pretty (Hee-hee).
(Down to the nightclub) Alright, now, now.
(Down to the nightclub)

Down to the nightclub,
Bump-ty, bump-ty, bump.

(I'm checking out the new album on Rhapsody now...thanks.)

11. Without no doubt, try the J.B.'s!
James Brown's funk band from the 70's is the epitome of funk. Some of my favs are Gimme Some More, The Grunt, Hot Pants Road, and If You Don't Get it the First Time Back Up and Try it Again. If you like horns, you'll love the J.B.'s.

13. Ooo! Ooo-ooo! Ooo!
Funky '70s music is one of my favorite genres, baby!

For an excellent overview of that music, I strongly recommend the Rhino label's five-volume series, IN YO' FACE! THE HISTORY OF FUNK.
