1. an underrated movie
A couple of things I really like:

1) It shows how the descent into our own hells is usually very gradual with incremental small decisions rather than one big one.

2) I love how the colors get darker and grainier as the movie progresses.

3) love Willem DaFoe and Greg Kinnear. Both are brilliant.

15. Curious About the Source Material
It's so obviously slanted to showing Carpenter guilty, but I'm curious as to where the movie makers got their material from, for individual scenes. ie, did one of the men leave a memoir?

16. I don't know
but I seem to remember that after Carpenter died, they found some sort of evidence that made it pretty likely it was him, but don't quote me on that.

Do you think Carpenter killed Crane?

14. They Kind of Made it Obvious
Didn't they? Or at least, their suspicion.

3. Excellent film. Both leads were perfect in their roles.
Kinda disconcerting to -- a week ago -- see a '60s-era candid photo of Someone Close To Me (who was then a model-starlet) with Bob Crane, who was even wearing his Hogan uniform. :o

Makes me wonder....

But no way was I going to ask.

6. 60's "innocence" morphs into 70's weirdness. Great flick.

9. Great movie,

The day dream Cane has involving Hilda, Klink, & Schultz is both funny and creepy at the same time. From what I've read, DaFoe captured Carpenter perfectly.

I don't know why Scottsdale cops didn't ever prosicute Carpenter, there was blood in his rental car, so that should have been enough to at least constitute evidence...

17. As the voice over says in the movie
Scottsdale & the whole Phoenix area were not very big or sophisticated back then. Misplaced/mishandled evidence, etc. Google "Bob Crane" and you can read much more interesting stuff.

He's just so great...here he plays a sympathetic bad guy... Good quiet movie...GREAT acting all around. Mirren/Redford should do more films together too - a great old married couple...
