Senator Leahy Pays Tribute to Phish in Congress
Edited on Sun Jul-11-04 08:22 PM by ALago1
Congress Pays Tribute to Phish 2004-07-09 12:47:46
Vermont Senator Patrick J. Leahy entered Phish into the congressional record yesterday, paying tribute to the Vermont-bred quartet a month before their final performance.

Addressing President pro tempore Ted Stevens, Leahy said, "We in Vermont are well known for our superb maple syrup, our wonderful ice cream, our award-winning cheese and our beautiful scenery, but after 21 remarkable years, the jam band Phish has certainly become one of our most famous exports.”

After giving his fellow congressmen a brief synopsis of Phish’s lifespan, Mr. Leahy offered his thanks to Phish for 21 years of music making. “Their admirable generosity has fostered a sense of community among those who follow the group,” Leahy said. “The band's break-up is a source of sadness to all of us who know and love them.”

As a big Phish fan who is sad to see them ago, I greatly appreciate these words from Leahy.

Wait -- when did they break up? Did I miss something? They're touring and just released an album -- right?

5. Yes they have broken up - but are doing this one last tour
The festival in Vermont will be their last show ever.

The new album is great, albeit different. I suggest you pick it up :)

7. Waste of time.
We've got economic trouble, a war in Iraq and terrorists planning to kill us this summer and he's working hard on recognizing Phish. This is as pointless as the White House turkey pardon at Thanksgiving.

9. Eh, give em a break
This speech probably took up all of 5 minutes. Nobody can be intense and on edge all the time - he or she would go nuts.

10. Not really a waste of time-
Think about how many quorum calls are used each day. At least he gave a positive speech about something that gives other people pleasure... and something that's from his home state. I say that this is a good use of the people's time, and especially better use than some of the vitriolic speeches that are sometimes heard coming from the hill...

8. when Zappa died
They played lots of his music for several nights, they were huge fans.

I like Phish - I have the Barry Beckett (Nashville-based) produced "Rift" and the great "Billy Breathes". Some of the better music of the 90's.
