Are there any funny conservatives?
Edited on Mon Jul-12-04 10:13 AM by Beware the Beast Man
A coworker of mine is a conservative, young repub type who I often spar with politically. We got on the subject of the Daily Show, which he thinks is hilarious despite the liberal bias. He also went to see Fahrenheit 911 and while he didn't agree with the conclusions in the film, he did find the comic placement of the music and the overall tone of some of the segments to be funny. He's also a huge fan of the Simpsons, which also leans left.
I realized that I can't think of a single show or comic with a conservative bend that I think is funny. The only exception I can come up with is Ben Stein, who, despite his repuke leanings, I find funny. Am I one-sided, or are conservatives just not funny?

22. He does have his moments
Mostly though, PJ O'Rourke is just a catty, snarky asshole.

24. I have to agree with your characterization fo P.J.
Still, I enjoy him in much the same way I enjoy David Spade.

But hey, he has been known to hang with HST and Bill Greider...

2. None that I can think of. Dennis Miller's name popped into my head.
And he's about as funny as a brain tumor.

5. Dennis Miller used to be funny. . .
Then he turned into a shill for the Right Wing, right around when we invaded Iraq. For a man that made his nickel beating on Reagan to give Greorge Bush "a pass". . . shows who's paying his salary.

12. I never thought he was funny
I didn't like his gigs on SNL. I've always thought he was pedantic and derivative.

Oddly, I thought he was pretty good on Monday Night Football, when he wasn't scripting obvious jokes. He tends to learn what other people are doing and imitate them. As a sportscaster, that analyzation skill was good. As a comedian, it means he's never original and rarely gets the humor he is imitating. He reminds me of the guy on Good Morning Viet Nam, who was always trying to fill in for Robin Williams but didn't get it.

6. There's a guy that did a serious 180
I can understand if he wants to suck up to the Right after 911, but his comedy bits went south as a result. I also think he's bitter over the Monday Night Football thing.

9. I think Miller believes the right wing is where the money is.
Hell, he'd have no career otherwise.

18. More like a 90 degreturn...
Edited on Mon Jul-12-04 10:32 AM by LowerManhattanite
I frequented 8-H (the SNL soundstage) for more than a few years through work and a couple of acquaintances and for the record, Miller was an insufferable *sshole even then. Very much a loner (and incapable of doing the sketch material which left the cast somewhat short-handed. Additionally, he often went out of the way to be mean to the nicest person in the cast, namely Phil Hartman), he played the "contrarian" role just to get people's goat. Now he's bought into it as otherwise nobody's give a rat's *ss about him. (Wanna p*ss him off? Make sure to mention his star turn in a cheesy "Tales From The Crypt" vampire tale)

As Arnold Horshack would say, "He's a common Schmendreck".

Dole however is actually a funny guy. Politics aside, he's just got a wit about him.

3. There are a few.
McCain has been amusing, from time to time. On the Daily Show, mostly. And of all people, Bob Fuckin' Dole, after he lost the election. . . again, on the Daily Show. He must have gotten the bug out of his ass after being beaten on by Clinton, because he's usually charming and funny when Stewart has him on.

As for the others um. . . well, if you pretend that you're watching some weird, hour-long SNL skit, Hannity can be kind of funny. But not so much.

11. Bob Dole
He and Clinton are friends...I saw him introduce Clinton before he gave a speech at the University of Kansas. (you can find it online at the C-SPAN website) but Dole was witty and had nice things to say about Bill, you could tell that the two can have a serious political debate without ripping each others throats out.

13. Bob Dole has a fabulously caustic sense of humor...
Edited on Mon Jul-12-04 10:25 AM by VelmaD
I've heard a story about something he said at the groundbreaking for some building or other. Former Presidents Ford, Carter and Nixon were there and Dole apparently looked at them, turned to the person next to him, and said, "Look it's hear no evil, see no evil, and evil". *snort*

He also used to tell one of my favorite jokes. "There's good news and bad news. The good news is a busload of supply-side economists went off a cliff". The bad news is...there were 2 empty seats."

I was really disappointed to see his sense of humor totally disappear when he was running for president.

21. Dole's Seriousness
Dole's PR people and pollsters told him he could win the election by being the "serious" candidate, because there was no way he could compete against the Clinton Charisma. So he took it full swing in the other direction, and not only was it boring, it didn't even suit him. I can't stand the man's policy, let's be clear on that. But he's not a loathesome creatin like the NeoCons that run the Republican party now, and yes, his comment about Nixon was hillarious and on the mark.

But Matt Drudge's Faux show (before he turned too dishonest even for Murdoch and got kicked off the air) was good for lots of unintentional hilarity...

Those dudes may vote Republican, but they are not "conservative" by any definition I know of.

There was an article on DU about "South Park Republicans"- did you catch that?

Perhaps the show does tap into people's cynical nature, and perhaps I am basing my definition of "conservative" on my Grandpa.

To be honest, I've never given the show much of a chance- killing the poor kid always turned me off...

There, I've said it. Finally admitted it after all these years. I'm not ashamed of it anymore. I'll say it again, and I don't care what anyone else thinks: Drew Carey is kind of funny. Feels good to get something like that off your chest, y'know?

19. Bob Hope was a right-winger -
but then, he wasn't funny at all. Once, at a gathering of famous comedians, Groucho was informed that Hope had brought four joke writers with him. Groucho's comment was "Only four? - For Bob Hope, that's practically ad-libbing."

27. Reply: The sad thing is that Repubs. have to Co-opt ALL liberal culture...
Text:

...be it Comedy, music, art, fashion or even a lot of science, conservatives must compromise their beliefs daily in order to enjoy basic American culture.

It must be rough to have to rationalze almost every single song, movie, fashion design, book.

I have conservative friends who also love Mark Twain, Simpsons, hip clothes, The Beatles- but they have to block out the Liberal reminders.

We should feel lucky that we dont have to do these things...
