Tell Us Something About Yourself That We Don't Already Know...
Edited on Mon Jul-12-04 11:17 AM by arwalden
... oh, it doesn't have to be a big deep dark secret... just something that you don't normally share with strangers. (But then again I'm 'stranger' than most... so it's okay to tell me. I'm good at keeping secrets.)

129. DON'T DO IT!!!!!
This is a subject near and dear to my heart.

I have known too many people through my involvement with the Size Acceptance Movement who have had horrible side effects as a result of weight loss surgeries of all types. Some have even died.

There was one woman here at DU who had this surgery after many of us tried to talk her out of it. Within a year, she had lost a lot of weight, most of her hair, and her teeth. She doesn't post any more, so no one knows what else has happened to her.

NAAFA has a section of their web site devoted to discussions by wight loss surgery survivors (www.naafa.org). Please go there and get more information before you embark on this highly dangerous course of action.

208. While I can appreciate the importance of a group like NAAFA
(and can appreciate even more that you give this advice with the best of intentions), I'm going to have surgery.

I don't want to accept this size, and for very good reason. It is hard to live my life in this body. I can't even climb into my bed without getting winded. It's getting so that it's hard to put shoes and socks on. I sleep w/ a CPAP for sleep apnea, and am on blood pressure meds. My doctor tells me my blood sugar is starting to rise and that within a few years I will be insulin dependent.

Yes, there are risks involved, but at this point, it is riskier for me to stay like this.

210. There Are Other Method That Are WAY Safer
Diet and exercise, for example.

As I've said in other threads about this subject, I wouldn't recommend weight loss surgery of any kind to my worst enemy.

Please do not do something that you (or your survivors) will regret later.

213. I know you are, and
I love you for it, really.

But you don't really think I would even consider this without going the diet/exercise route FIRST, do you? In fact, most insurance companies won't even consider covering the surgery without documentation of multiple medically-supervised efforts.

Yep, sometimes people die from surgery. I know of quite a few people that never lived until they had it done.

81. Wow!! That's On My 2-Do List
Was it difficult? Did you dig holes and use cement? Or did you just use the concrete base thingies that just rest on the surface and let you attach the upright pieces? (I haven't a clue what they're called.)

Also... did you plan everything before you started, or did you just make it up as you went along? <--- the preferred method of many.

97. I Built Each One in a Weekend
The one by my front door came first. It is actually two 8 x 10 decks nailed together. I built it when our mobile home was in a mobile home park, and designed it to sit on the cement slab that was next to our house. It originally had three sets of legs. When we bought the land and had our house moved to Pueblo West, the contractor split the deck in two, transported it to the new lot, and reassembled it, using posts set in concrete and notching the decking boards to accommodate the posts.

The 8 x 8 deck came next. Originally, I built it to go outside our back door, but when we put a door on our kitchen, I disassembled it and moved it around to the other side of the house. I used concrete "base thingies" for that deck.

The deck over the pool came next. It's right next to the 8 x 8 deck I moved in the last paragraph, with a smaller deck and staircase connecting the two. It used the base thingies, too.

I planned out everything before I started each deck. From that, I was able to figure out how much wood to buy. If you plan ahead and take your time, decks are easy to build. One suggestion, though - I build the first deck with nails - the other two were built with screws. Screws hold together better, and don't work loose like nails do. (I have to go over my front deck every few months to pull out the loose nails and replace them with screws. It really makes me appreciate the Craftsman cordless drill my wife bought for me a few years ago....)

Peanut (l) and Pearl (r) are standing on the steps leading from my back yard to the 6 x 10 deck that goes over our above-ground pool. On the other side of the deck, you can see the handrail for the staircase that connects to a small deck that connects the two larger decks. The 8 x 8 deck is to the right in the picture. Mrs. CO Liberal is looking out the kitchen door.

175. I'm Impressed!! Thanks For The Stories, Advice, And Photo!!
I really don't want to dig post holes and fill them with concrete (making sure that everything is dead-on level)... and what if I mis-measure or mis-align after it's in the hole and the concrete has set? Argh!

That's why I've been looking closely at the concrete block leg-things. My only concern about them was whether or not they were stable and if they had any tendency to settle (after a rain perhaps) and cause any problems with the deck being unlevel. --- Or is the settling no more than you would have had anyway with concreted postholes?

Yep... I've had a deck that was nailed, and about every month, I'd go out with a claw hammer or prybar nail puller and replace nails with screws. WHAT DID people do before cordless drills/screwdrivers??

201. You're Welcome!!
Those concrete footers have been very stable. I just made sure the ground was tamped down beneath them, and then made sure they were level. Of course, Pueblo West is a semi-arrid area (we've been in a drought for the past few years), so rain had not been an issue....

150. I built my back deck two summers ago
It took two weeks of solid work, from Bobcat drilling of the holes (19 of them!) to finish. That doesn't include the railing, which still isn't quite done. It has a large rectangular section at a 45 deg. angle to the house, plus a raised ocatgonal section where the table and chairs sit. That's why it took two weeks! It turns out that the clay we sit on is rather porous, so I have to jack it up a bit from time to time. Good thing I used screws, there isn't a nail anywhere in it.

I dated a guy about your height, maybe an inch or so taller, maybe not. He was very confident and I always remember him as taller, so when i see him I'm surprised he's not much taller than I (5 foot 4). I think what people really notice is not your height, but how you carry yourself.

131. Right on...
for a while a had several guys in my local community give me crap because I wasn't "gay enough" & wasn't following "their agenda" (I guess they somehow staked claim to the agenda) -- WTF -- I mean those kinds of attitudes just create more divisiveness, which is the last thing any of us needs. I ultimately had to make my own stand as an individual - for my own spiritual survival.

It's all about just knowing yourself.. I think self knowledge is the best thing you can give yourself, no matter how much it hurts to get to that point...

PS -- You said a while back you are a Tori fan. I just got my copy of Scarlet's Walk in the mail today:) I downloaded it (illegally of course) when it came out, but my comp crashed & I lost all my mp3's... So I finally broke down & bought it... Great album, I'll be listening to it after work...

My brothers and sisters and I were on the list for years to get on that show until we all aged out and of course, the show was cancelled. Two of us did get on "Wonderama" though (and witnessed a near riot after the rigged dance contest was exposed).

I had a little crush on Miss Louise who hosted "Romper Room" when I was a kid.

"Romper, bomper, stomper-boo,
Magic mirror tell me today...
have all my friends had fun and play?

Ohhh...I see Bertha Venation, and LynneSin, and NightTrain and Skinner..."

Only one week, though, but that week included November 22, 1963. It was done live, but was pre-empted for this. However, to keep the kiddied happy, they went and did the show anyway. I can remember Miss Ann being really edgy one day, prolly this one, and naturally we brats picked up on that, making things even worse.

Edited on Mon Jul-12-04 12:20 PM by Lisa0825
and it is what saved my life when I fell from a tall playground swing I had climbed up. The docs said I was born with a neck much stronger than normal, due to the fusion, and if not, I surely would have broken my neck high enough that I wouldn't have survived, or at best would be completely paralyzed. He said that kind of deformity had been linked to mothers drinking too much caffeine.

"The average male American mens height is 177 cm, which is 69.7 inches, which is approximately 5 foot - 10 inches tall. (for white males*)."

From http://www.halls.md/chart/men-height-w.htm

At 5'5" (the same as Radar O'Reilly on MASH) that puts me 5 inches below average. Most men tower over me, and most women are taller too, it seems. I don't currently know any adult who is shorter than me, and even my two grandchildren are taller than me.

of the National Park Service - see the fireworks over San Francisco Bay from Alcatraz and spend the night. We have a friend who used to be a Park Ranger there. He's at a more traditional National Park now.

Got the FULL tour, too. Walked around on the roof, slipped around in the basement, the guard galleries, etc. and slept in the third tier of cells - D block (which faces SF BAY and the city). It was strange but memorable. :D

I just took my daughter to Alcatraz recently (first time there) and we loved exploring the island. Camping out there for the night sounds like a blast :)

One question though: I was under the impression that the upper tiers were unrestored and generally not maintained because nobody visited them. What condition were they in when you visited? Did the toilets work?

No-o-o-o, the toilets did not work. :D
Everyone had to drag their tired butts out of their cell, out of the cell block, out of the prison and to the public restrooms just outside the main doors (by the warden's house).

The cells in D-block were not restored but they were clean and well maintained. One night there was enough for me. I can't imagine spending years in place like that. :shudder:

82. I was voted Mr. Chivalry
Edited on Mon Jul-12-04 02:00 PM by johnnie
In 4th grade the girls voted me Mr. Chivalry. I think we were studying medieval times or something. That was in the mid seventies, I'm sure they wouldn't dare do that now.
I don't know what made me think of this one..., there are more interesting things I'm sure. :)

93. I might have mentioned this before...
...I don't remember, but, I have a foot fetish. Actually, I don't know if "fetish" really describes it. I simply find a nice pair of feet as attractive as I do a nice pair of legs. I don't necessarily want to DO anything with the feet. A lot of people seem to be indifferent to feet unless they are really gross or really smelly. Once I meet a guy I find attractive, I almost immediately wonder what his feet look like. I don't have to wonder too much in the summer time, though.

City maps, to be precise. I sometimes buy a city/street map of a city I like, take it home, and draw over the streets with a bold black pen. The largest city I've completed so far is Winnipeg, and that map is hanging on my bedroom wall. I'm also currently working on Boise, Lincoln, NE and Indianapolis.

And it might not even be Chinese... but here it is phonetically:

But if you know what it means... let me know.

I've also never had stitches, except for my appendectomy, but that doesn't really count. However, I cut my mom's lawn on Saturday, and if I hadn't had a padded hat on, I definitely would have split my head right open on a low-hanging tree limb.

Never been stung by a bee, either. For all I know it could kill me in seconds.

I've also never gone off a diving board, but that's from a combination of cowardice and lack of swimming skills.

Edited on Mon Jul-12-04 08:03 PM by LowerManhattanite
One: A seven-month old with AIDS-triggered symptoms when I was in college. (I still have nightmares about seeing his final movements through a hospital doorway).

Two: A derelict drunkenly stumbling across the third rail at the 34th St. & 8th Ave. IND station one bitterly cold winter night. Brutal.

Three: A man jump from an 11th floor window to his suicide. I was with an ex of mine walking by and trying to call the police while she was angrily ripping me for delaying her getting to an audition. She dragged me into a cab and as we pulled off, he fell with a loud gasp from the crowd and then a deep metallic thud. He landed on a grate.

Live in NY long enough and not limit where you go and someday you will see a person die. The population density simply dictates it.

This was pretalk show days. I was on one of those catwalks going one way, he was going the other. We kinda exchanged looks. You have to understand too, I had his doll as a child. He must have been going the wrong way, because when I got to my gate, after getting a magazine, he was sitting across from me. He smiled and spoke. Then I said, "You're going to think this is so creepy, but I have your Barbie doll." He laughed and we exchanged small talk until my plane was called.
Everytime I go on a plane trip, I meet someone especially cool. I don't know where I get the luck.

There was a syndicated TV convention in town, so I headed down to the Quarter for a little celebrity spotting. Wishing to avoid a scene, I moved on around the corner onto Bourbon St., and sure 'nuff, there was Alex, listening to pearls of wisdom like "I've got a question for you, Alex!" (not me)

My favorite show is Globe Trekker on PBS.

My father is a schizophrenic Vietnam veteran.

I gave birth to twins at the age of 19.

I got suspended in high school for punching my ex-boyfriend and knocking his teeth out (I swear I'm not a violent person).

195. Do As My Brother Did... He Went From EMT to Firefighter to Police
He told me that he LOVED being a firefighter... but he looked into the future and just couldn't see himself being 55 and hanging on to a rolling firetruck enroute to another fire. So, he gave it up after 8 years or so and got involved with law enforcement.

Other than being a "cowboy" and "astronaut"... he's living the dreams of many young boys.

199. I was first runner-up in Junior Miss Pageant
Their motto was Poise, Personality and Promise...

It was judged on grades, personal interview, talent (I danced). My prize was a 4 year scholarship to Columbia College - a private girls college in Missouri.

204. I've tiled four bathrooms and a kitchen, replaced a toilet and all
the faucets in my house, screened in a porch (another house), layed a walkway of fieldstone, replaced the pump on my swimming pool, replaced all the chandeliers and light fixtures and fans, and in the distant past, carpeted my apartment... single-handedly. :patting self on back:

And I'm not even that butch :)

207. I was a breach baby and I almost died when I was born
Had the cord wrapped around my neck and everything. I was premature, underweight and spent some time in an incubator. My right arm was in a brace for the first 6 months of my life. My mother tells me when she left the hospital (with me still there), she thought I wasn't going to make it.

I think it was because my mom's doctor told her it was fine to have a Scotch when she wanted, even though she was pregnant. In fact, he recommended it. This was in the mid 60's so I guess I can't blame him.

209. I'm a natural blond, but...
I dyed my hair purple in about 6th grade. It went white, after reacting with the chemicals in a pool. My hair has been brown ever since the dye came out.
