Anyone practice Baal Fertility Rituals?
Edited on Mon Jul-12-04 11:54 AM by LynneSin
Leviticus 18:22:
"You shall not lie with a male as those who lie with a female; it is an abomination."

Leviticus 20:13:
"If a man lies with a male as those who lie with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination and they shall surely be put to death."

Both of these verses refer not to homosexuals but to heterosexuals who took part in the Baal fertility rituals in order to guarantee good crops and healthy flocks. No hint at sexual orientation or homosexuality is even implied. The word abomination in Leviticus was used for anything that was considered to be religiously unclean or associated with idol worship. The use of Leviticus to condemn and reject homosexuals is obviously a hypocritical selective use of the Bible against gays and lesbians.

In case someone says the Bible is against homosexuals - it was really against those who practiced in Baal Fertility Rituals

BTW: I love this website and the six verses that supposively says the bible talks against homosexuals

2. I've read
countless ways to "explain away" the Leviticus proscriptions, but I think they're silly.

I'm perfectly willing to accept that a desert tribe, 3000 years ago, outlawed homosexuality. I think a simple reading of the text is all that's necessary. If they were talking about Baal fertility rituals, they would've said so. The ancient Hebrews forbade homosexuality.

So what? We are not ancient Hebrews.

5. But we're talking about interpretations
that have been passed on throughout many generations until finally printed. Biblical Scholars have said that half of the Lord's Prayer is really an add-on by the early Catholic Church.

I would more believe about the Baal rituals since Baal was a prevelant god of the time over concerns of homosexuality. But this is today and we need to find new ways to discriminate so let's reinterpret the bible!

3. Leviticus was a HEALTH book

Most of those things mentioned (namely promiscuity) were considered "abominations" as a way to promote good health (so folks would not promote the spread of STDs, possibly). Same applies to all the dietary restrictions (pork, shellfish, etc.).

ON EDIT- remember, these were the days before condoms and STD checkups were readily available. There were no free clinics in ancient Israel.
