Every time I hear RWers go off about how the Jews run everything and that all Jews are rich and money grubbers I ponder... Where the hell is my "JEW CHECK"? I keep going to the mailbox to look for the damn thing and it is never there.

Any of you other DU Jews gettin your check? Did I miss filling out a form or something?

I've been selling things on ebay and offering my ebaying instructional services to friends at $25 an hour. That seems to include reinitializing their peripherals. For ladies who have a lot of stuff to sell, the fact that they can have a woman holding their hand while they do this seems to be comforting.

I know exactly what you mean. People always assume that I am wealthy when they find out that I am Jewish. When I was younger, most people assumed I would end up a doctor or a lawyer. Here I am as a starving artist. Even other Jews don't really know what to make of that.

I know nothing can get "anti-Zionists" more in a tizzy than the implication that anti-Zionism or being anti-Israel is the same thing as being anti-semitic. And that is technically true, they aren't the same exact thing, but it's incumbent apon these people to not ignore the obvious regularity with which old anti-semitic stereotypes seep into the language of so many prominent and vocal grassroots "anti-Zionists". I know I got off topic ALOT from your initial post, but I think it's important that we critisize the critism of the jewish people not only coming from the right, but now the left as well. Because I think it's a lot more unlikely that we can change the minds of right-wing racist zealots than confused extreme lefties.

Adressing your main point, it's of course empty and anti-intellectual to claim that all jews are rich. However, if you do look at the statistics, Jews do earn per capita more than few other groups. This is of course not caused by a genetic superiority but a cultural and traditional disciplinary superiority. Having religious and cultural traditions that so heavily involve the rigirous learning of historic and linguistic material is something that no doubt shapes so many jewish peoples analytical minds so well, and of course the Jewish people do seem to have a tradition of placing respect and admiration on intellectual persuits over physical, something that has suited them well compared to the rest of America.

THere was a really good article somewhere, maybe Salon, that talked about this. I also read one comparing the early waves of Irish, Italian, and Jewish imigrants of a century and more ago, to the Asian, Hispanic, and black urban populations that took root at a later date in the cities and compared the populations generational similarities. They noted particular similarities between the Jewish populations that first established themselves a 100 or so years ago in the American cities to the Asian ones that have been for the second half of the 20th century.
