P Todd Stottlemyer (dad Mel)
C Bob Boone (dad Ray)
1b Steve Garvey (dad Marcus) ***okay that ones a joke***
2b Roberto Alomar (dad Sandy Sr)
SS Please not Dale Berra, there must be another
3b Buddy Bell
lf DUH
Cf Ken Griffey Jr (dad Ned Griffey)
Rf Jose Cruz Jr

***The real fisrt baseman is Jim Hegan (dad Mike)

So we need a better shortstop and a better rightfielder

1. I almost said "what about Bonds ..."
then realized you put "DUH" in left field.

Could you put Moises Alou in right (dad Felipe)?

Nothing on the shortstop (yet) ... I'll keep thinking.

2. How about Dick Schofield at short? Or Hal Lanier? Or Tom Tresh?
Edited on Thu Aug-28-03 01:41 AM by 5thGenDemocrat
I'd take any of the three over Dale Berra (esp Lanier, who was a fine shortstop for the Giants when I was a kid).
Tresh was the AL Rookie of the Year in 1962(?) for the Yankees -- plus he played his college ball at my alma mater, Central Michigan University (Chip-POOOOOO-Wah!!). His dad was Mike Tresh.
For the final outfield position, take either Dixie or Harry (the Hat) Walker, whose dad (also named Harry) played, albeit briefly, in the majors. Either one was an above average outfielder.
Also, I'd choose Joe Coleman (Jr) as my pitcher over Todd Stottlemyre. Coleman won 20 games one season (for the Tigers) and I don't think Stottlemyre ever did.
John
It's baseball -- your opinions may vary. BTW -- Jim Hegan is the dad, Mike is the son. Jim was a catcher, so you're still okay as to the position.

4. Ricky's dad wasn't a major leaguer
We're going for the all-position sons of major leaguers.
John
Nevertheless, how ABOUT Ricky? One helluva ballplayer.

5. David Bell is arguably a better shortstop

6. Better than Berra, yes
Toss-up with Schofield. I'd take either Lanier or Tresh over him, though.
John
But, like I said, your opinions may vary.

9. Nope
Edited on Thu Aug-28-03 01:57 AM by 5thGenDemocrat
Cal Sr never played in the majors. He was an MLB coach and manager, though.
John
When we get done thrashing this out, we should do the all-dad team. That would be at least as interesting.
(I've got my Baseball Encyclopedia out now. You don't think I'm getting all this off the top of my head, do you?)

10. Thank you very much
I forgot all about Schofield and did not know that Tresh's dad played ball.

The Walkers are not allowed on my team on moral grounds (Jackie)

Todd Stottlemyer won twenty with the Cards and pitched in a lot of high pressure games. But we need 10 of them anyway...

I forgot about Moises too. So I guess I would take him over another guy I just remembered, Danny Tartabull.

So

SS Tom Tresh
Rf Moises Alou

The batting order:

Alomar
Tresh
Griffey
Bonds
Alou
Bell
Hegan
Boone
pitcher
