Iowa Parish Plans Book Burning
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) -- A church's plan for an old-fashioned book-burning has been thwarted by city and county fire codes.

1. Well at least the city and county came through
but I think I'll travel up there anyway to tell the church hierarchy that they are totally fucked up. C.R. is actually a fairly progressive city and it's good to see that the City powers that be are telling these mothercheneys no. Jesus, whats next?

10. THIS IS A DAMN GOOD IDEA!
I'm for it! I can set up in an hour a web page with the name of the books they'll be burning then DU'ers can go there, see what books are left to be bought then go to their local bookstore or Borders or Amazon, buy the book and donate it to the Cedar Rapids library! I know that the books aren't coming from there (they're being bought ala, "Let's show the French what we think of them by buying their wine and dumping it in the gutter!"), but this would be cool to do, and it would piss off some fundies!

16. if you set it up, I'll certainly participate
part of my problem is that I often have good ideas, but I have no ambition to implement them.

but if you go for this I'll help you to publicize it.

3. shredding not "biblical"
love this part:
"Breedlove said a city fire inspector suggested shredding the offending material, but Breedlove said that wouldn't seem biblical."

6. Actually, you can!
"...wanted to rekindle that tradition in a July 28 ceremony where books, CDs, videos and clothing would have been thrown into the flames".

9. Yep!
Sorry, I have this compulsive urge to quote Homer Simpson when confronted by overwhelming stupidity.

8. "An old-fashioned book burning"? WTF?
Why don't they just have "an old-fashioned lynching" or an "old fashioned stoning"? Or an "old fashioned slave sale"
Since when has book burning become a fondly remembered social activity?
Get a grip, people, your country is regressing back to the dark ages.

12. I hate to break it to these 'morans'
but book-burning isn't precisely Biblical, either, since there weren't any cheneying books at the time the Bible was written! Scroll-burning or tablet-busting, maybe. Book-burning, no.

:eyes:

Perhaps they should try googling Gutenberg...

15. some things never change
I wrote this lyric in 1985 or 1986, during phase-one of the
fundy revolt--

(OK, it's a lot better with the music,
sort of a Beach Boys/Cowsills lighthearted 60s romp.)

The flock has come together 'cuz tonight there'll be fair weather
and tonight's the night we'll show some righteous wrath,
the enemy's been winning and the devil must be grinning
'cuz he's led them down his dark and evil path
We gotta do something show them that we mean it
or our vigilance and zeal will grow lax
we gotta do somethig before we we lose our holy war
so tonight will be the night we start to stop them in their tracks

It's a beautiful night for a book burning
a beautiful night to watch the flames shoot high
it's such a beautiful sight, all the books burning
oh, what a glorious fire

They would not believe us when we told them we were furious
about all the things they're teaching to our kids
and they would not believe us when we told them we were serious
and now the time has come to flip our lids
It wasn't enough to picket in the school year
or pack a board of education now and then
it wasn't enough to form comittees in our jerkwater cities
so tonight will be the night we start to put things right again
(chorus)
